2019 Abernethy Carnival This Friday!

Here’s all you need to know…

When: Friday, May 17th, 5:30-8:00pm

Games: We'll have all the old favorites and some new games to check out: extreme blasters, limbo, nose picker, new and improved plinko and bean bag toss. Plus, two balloon artists, professional airbrush face painter, fairy sparkle hair, a photo booth and tons of inflatable fun!

Food: Hot Lips, Steam-Workz Hotdogs, Pepe Caliente Mexican, Brain Freeze Shaved Ice, and Churros Locos.

Come hungry! 10-15% of third-party food purchases will be donated back to the Abernethy PTA General Fund.
$25 buys a 100-ticket bundle. $13 buys a 50-ticket bundle. $5 buys a 20-ticket bundle. Tickets can be used for games and food. Reference the PRICE SHEET to determine how many tickets you will need. Cash is always appreciated but check and cards are fine too.

Bracelets: NEW THIS YEAR! $30 buys a bracelet good for unlimited games and activities. In addition to unlimited games, inflatables and activities, bracelets entitle the holder to one of each of the following: cotton candy, popcorn, fudgsicle.  Remember to be patient with our volunteers as we transition to this new system!  Note that bracelets are NOT VALID with third party vendors (Hot Lips Pizza, Hot Dogs, Shaved Ice, Pepe Caliente, Churros Locos, Fairy Hair). Purchase from third party vendors can be made with cash, credit and tickets.

Pre-Event: Beat the rush and buy tickets/bracelets in the gazebo before and after school all week (Monday 5/13 – Friday 5/17).

Not at school?  Buy online at
www.supportabernethy.org.  Your child can bring the receipt to the gazebo to claim their tickets or bracelet before the event or to the ticket table the night of the event. Online pre-sales will end Thursday night, May 16th.

During the Event: Tickets and bracelets will be sold outside the main office the night of the event beginning at 5:00pm

Cake-A-Palooza: Consider donating a store-bought cake and dropping it off in the gymnasium Friday morning or afternoon. Please take a moment to review the RULES FOR CAKES. If a child is caught violating the Rules for Cakes, they may be asked to leave carnival.  Please make sure your child(ren) understand these rules before participating in the cake-a-palooza. If you can bring a cake, or if you have questions, please contact Rachel Haas.

Volunteers: We need LOTS of help from our awesome community to make this event happen.  If you haven’t already signed up for a shift, hurry up so we can stop sending annoying emails!!!

We hope to see all of you at the 2019 Carnival!!!

Important Day Of Carnival Reminders!

  • After school Friday we will be roping off the covered area and turf to set up. For safety reasons, please keep kids clear of this area.
  • If your child goes to Art4Life or garden please have a clear plan for pick-up.
  • Tell kids to bring a bag to carry all their swag!!
  • Have some cash on hand to help lines move more quickly.
  • Carnival can get crowded.  Please make sure your child knows that the lost and found is located at the ticket table near the main office.
  • Big time fun means big time clean up! Please make a special effort to have kids clean up after themselves and throw garbage and recycling into the proper receptacles.
All volunteers should check in at the volunteer table located in the hallway across from the auditorium before their shift.  You will be given a name tag and directed where to go at that time. Each game has a sheet of instructions, PLEASE READ YOUR INSTRUCTIONS SHEET. Questions? Contact our volunteer coordinator.

Community Meeting - Thursday, 6:30pm

This Thursday is our last Community Meeting of the year and it's an important one.  We will be voting on new board members, voting on next year's budget and getting an update from the Garden Committee on daytime garden and an after-school garden option.

Please plan to attend.  Childcare is provided.
There are still some great ways to participate in next year’s PTA board!  We are looking for:

Volunteer Coordinators: Are you someone who likes to work with various people in our school community to make things happen? This position is great for someone who can participate in school day activities. Historically, this position has been shared by 2 people, so we are recruiting two people to share the job!

Membership: Are you someone excited about building our PTA community and welcoming new members? This role, which has the largest commitment at the beginning of the school year, involves preparing forms for new members and completing submission to our parent PTA organizations, as well as distributing those Chinook Books!

Auction Co-Chair: Are you someone with a creative streak and organizational skills? Share the planning of next year’s event (scheduled for February 29th, 2020) with the continuing Chair! The auction has a significant impact on the financial viability of Abernethy’s programs. While this position is time-intensive, it is only for a concentrated period of time. Co-chairs must prepare materials, provide website updates, provide timely communication with the community, assemble the necessary volunteers, and report to the board on progress and donations.

Communications Co-Chair: Are you someone excited about keeping our community informed about important events, activities, and actions in our school and beyond? The Communications Co-Chair, will join our current nominee (who will produce the Monday Mailer) to share info across our social media platforms and with room parents when necessary. This role can be done entirely remotely.

Chili Cook-Off Chair: Are you someone who loves good food and community building? Chili Cook-Off is our beloved friendly springtime competition where kids and adults show off their culinary skills and bring the community together for this free event. This event requires a short-term commitment for the planning, organization, and carrying out of the event.

Thanks for your consideration!
Contact the Nominating Committee if you're interested in a position or have someone to suggest.

Exciting News from the PTA Garden Committee!

We’re thrilled to announce a big change for our daytime and after-school garden programs for the 2019-2020 school year. We’re teaming up with ECO (Ecology Outdoors & in the Classroom)!

Their education model is built on inquiry and project-based learning. They emphasize hands-on!

ECO programs promote critical thinking and guide students to connect academic content to real world challenges. Kids develop ecological literacy while building skills in communication, collaboration, and creativity. ECO’s interdisciplinary lessons align with Next Generation Science Standards that provide real-world STEM learning, and support teachers in meeting academic benchmarks.

ECO will be offering an after-school program focusing on the ecology of the Garden of Wonders and the surrounding natural space of the school. Through experiments, art, gardening, and tasting students will build their sense of place, track the changes in the seasons, grow food to share with one another, and build their sense of curiosity. Registration will start soon. Check here for more details.

The PTA is also working with ECO to bring outdoor science instruction back to the daytime curriculum.  These outdoor lessons will use the Garden of Wonders and Abernethy’s native grounds to provide hands-on, standards-based instruction in ecology and natural science concepts.

Starting this Fall and throughout the year, ECO’s teachers will visit and offer 4-6 sessions to all students in grades K-3.

Welcome to the Abernethy community ECO!

Walk & Roll to School in May!

May is W&R month for Safe Routes to School, and Abernethy is hosting some fun celebrations!  Friday mornings in May we'll be welcoming kids who walk or roll to school in the gazebo. We’ll draw grand prize winners from all participating kids at both the K-2 and 3-5 grade levels at the end of the month!
If you usually drive your kids over, but can park further away and walk or roll the rest of the way to Abernethy, we’d love to have your kids participate in PBOT's Park & Walk challenge! Walking or scooting over with neighbors or friends closer to school can be a great start to the day too.

*New this year, our Safe Routes co-chair Daniel Amoni has offered to lead a bike train from Piccolo Park each M-Th morning! He'll be at Piccolo at 8:15 each morning and will plan to depart with any parents & kids at 8:22 to all ride to school together. Email him with any questions or more info.

Thanks!
-Susan Beal, SRTS co-chair (Pearl 5th, Everett 2nd)

From the P.E. Corner

The Kids Heart Challenge has been up and running during our PE Classes these passed 2 weeks with one more week to go!!!
Sponsor sheets are due by May 17th! We will have a chance to show off our jumping skills at 6 & 8 pm with the DJ this year at the carnival! Just a 3 min. routine that kids can do if they choose to show off what they have been learning in PE this month.

The United States is seeing an alarming trend with childhood obesity.  Today, a startling one in three American kids and teens is overweight or obese.  Some kids are at risk of developing heart problems because of poor nutrition and lack of exercise.  Sadly, childhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions.

For 40 years The American Heart Association have been teaching children the importance of heart-healthy habits - a foundation for the rest of his/her life.  This service-learning program will also share with your child the inspirational stories of children who have been touched by this disease while they raise funds to help kids like them and save and improve all lives.

I want to thank the students for taking part in the Kids Heart Challenge this year.  Let's keep up the great work!!!

Annual IRCO Fundraiser

For many years, our community has spent a week supporting a non-profit organization through a “bring-a-book, buy-a-book” fundraiser.  This year we are again supporting an organization that helps refugees and immigrants in Portland.  This non-profit is called the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization, or IRCO.

This week you can bring in children’s books to donate.  Picture books and chapter books are all welcome.  The event occurs May 28th – 31st.  Students will have the opportunity then to purchase books to take home.  All books are $1.00.

This money is then donated to IRCO.  Last year we raised $1800 for IRCO with this fundraiser.

Volunteers
Looking for other ways to help?  We are in need of adult volunteers to help students select books and take money during school hours or you can volunteer your time after school when students can continue to browse and buy books.  We are using SignUP.com to help people sign up.  Here is the
link.

Any questions please contact Jenny Morgan.

Thank you for your support!
