CCRG in Action

Hi <<First Name>>

CCRG volunteers spend a large amount of time preparing submissions and giving feedback on proposals that impact the city centre. We are very grateful to those that donate their time to CCRG because without them CCRG would not exist.

Positive outcomes do come to those that persist. Recently Auckland Transport announced a design change to Princes St at Eden Cres. Their inital design was less than ideal and would not provided the outcomes CCRG is looking for in street scape improvements. CCRG is very pleased the submission we prepared was considered. The intersection design has been drastically improved and will greatly improve the environment for the many people who walk in the area. Check out the final design here.

However, not all action taken by CCRG is successful so we have to try again. Recently CCRG learned that the mooring dolphins were approved on the end of Queen's Wharf. As this is the people's wharf, this decision goes directly against the core functions of the intended use of the space. The wharf is a huge piece of our ever dwindling public space in the city and CCRG is prepared to follow through on appeal. Noelene, Chair of CCRG, will continue to fight the decision by working with community partners to overturn the decision through a formal appeal process.

Regards,

Emily Reeves
Deputy Chair

Neighbours Day - Community Shared Lunch

The CCRG Committee along with Ellen Melville Centre hosted a neighbours day community shared lunch as part of Neighbours Day Aotearoa. The community came together with entertainment put on city centre residents and speeches were given by Pippa Coom and Richard Northey from the Waitemata Local Board. We even gave away some spot prizes thanks to a few generous donors.

The focus of the day was community and building relationships. The event was a huge success and will definitely be hosted again next year. We hope you'll join us.

Safer Speeds in Auckland

CCRG is now a member of the Healthy Streets Alliance and has an aim improve road safety and health in New Zealand. Emily Reeves, CCRG Deputy Chair, has published articles in support of lower speeds in the city centre in both Our Auckland and the Ponsonby News.

As CCRG continues to work to advocate for road safety we eagerly await to see the outcome of the Auckland Transport consultation on speed management in Auckland. They received over 10,000 responses which will no doubt take them some time to review. CCRG remains positive that AT will do the right thing and help CCRG make the city centre the nice and enjoyable place it can be.

You can read more about the speed management consultation on AT's website.

Did you know?

NZTA has a new project called Innovating Streets for People. They are working with councils and road authorities nationwide to overhaul how community groups and schools across the country can take the streets into their own hands. Think tactical urbanism, street activations, block parties, and generally just taking the streets back for the local communities without all the red tape these groups currently face. Keep an eye out for more information on this project.
