Regional Arts Australia (RAA) Needs Your Help!

RAA is calling for an increase of at least $2 million per year to the Regional Arts Fund.

This will restore the RAF to its pre-2010 value by lifting the total value of the fund to $22.5 million over four years, beginning in July 2020.

Increasing funding to the RAF will enable more support, better outcomes and stronger communities across Australia. The RAF is an extensive national program, funded by the Australian Government and is one of the most successful funding programs supporting arts and culture in Australia.

Between 2012 and 2016 the Regional Arts Fund supported 1,458 projects; 3,979,899 participants; 843 professional development opportunities; 1,943 artists and arts workers and 3,015 partnerships.

RAA need you to energise your communities and let our elected representatives know that regional arts matter and that the RAF deserves to be increased.

Creative Pathways for Young Indigenous People Through the Arts

Young people from Woorabinda had a taste of possible arts futures when they experienced a workshop at the CQUniversity Rockhampton City Visual Arts labs as a part of their Youth Week activities.
This experience was also one of the first projects rolling out under the new Central Queensland Regional Arts Services Network (CQ RASN).
This particular project aimed to build and showcase the Indigenous arts profile of Woorabinda and the Central Queensland region.

The Woorabinda arts project is being coordinated by First Nations artist and youth worker Nickeema Williams, with the support of CQ RASN Regional Arts Officer Julie Barratt.

For the recent CQUniversity Rockhampton City visit, associate lecturer and artist Patrick Connor facilitated a 2D drawing workshop, enabling students to work with plant-based materials, to look at ways of ‘seeing’ and rendering those objects as still life and abstract drawings.

"This was the first time these young people had been on to a CQUniversity campus and it was a great opportunity for them to tour the facilities as well as take part in a fun, creative activity," says Ms Barratt.

"The only downside was that everyone was so engaged that the time went too quickly.

"This is just the start of more arts engagement with the Woorabinda community who have aspirations to use the arts as a key pillar to open up more employment, training and enterprise opportunities for the community."

Access Community Services

BEMAC is seeking expressions of interest (EOIs) from local individuals, groups, businesses and not-for-profits based in Ipswich and Logan to develop local projects that:

* Build capacity for artists, creatives and arts workers
* Develop individual skills and opportunities
* Respond to local needs
* Build local leadership and partnerships in arts and culture
* Support economic development
* Engage and enliven local venues
* Value heritage, history and culture (including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures)

Successful EOIs may be supported financially up to $2,500 and / or through the provision of mentorship, marketing, project development, partnership development and more.

EOIs will be assessed by BEMAC and City Council cultural staff.

EOIs can be completed online at bemac.org.au

BEMAC is stoked to be supporting award-winning playwright, screen playwright, actor, director and filmmaker Future D. Fidel’s next creative project.
The Victim is a feature film that tells the story of an African nurse, who after getting a sponsorship to work with one of Australia’s leading pharmaceutical company, struggles to balance her work and family. The daily violence in her home could soon cost her everything she lived to build.

Future D. Fidel was this year the recipient of the “Best Mainstage Award” at the prestigious Matilda Awards for his powerful theatrical piece Prize Fighter, which he wrote, acted and co-directed.

Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Future D. Fidel lost both his parents and was separated from his siblings in the civil unrest that followed the death of President Mobutu. When civil war struck in 1996, he was forced to flee as an orphan stowaway to Tanzania where he spent eight years in a refugee camp before being accepted into Australia.

He has been a prolific and respected force in Queensland’s theatre, film and performing arts landscape, and BEMAC is proud to be able to support his journey as a gifted and dynamic creative voice in Queensland’s cultural landscape.

BUILDING a music career takes a team, indeed an entire industry to kick-start that journey.

BEMAC is seeking submissions from a Logan-based artist or band to record an original song which will be professionally mixed and mastered, ready for release. The finished work will then undergo a professional publicity campaign to assist the song’s promotional efforts.

Delivered under BEMAC’s EMERGE Series, an artist development program established in 2017 to empower emerging musicians to cultivate their performance, songwriting, recording and business and marketing skills, RECORD & RELEASE will support the development of a thriving career for one Logan artist or band.

For musicians, EMERGE provides opportunities to develop and upskill through various opportunities and programs like RECORD and its partner program RELEASE, which focus on the full scope of what it takes to flourish as a musician in the modern world.

From DIY home-recording techniques to building your online presence, BEMAC’s EMERGE Series creates inroads for emerging musicians to take their music to a broader audience.

Interested artists and bands based in Logan can apply through https://bemac.typeform.com/to/hV7aSZ

If submitting a band 75% of total members must be Logan City residents.

BEMAC throws support behind “Around the Clock”

BEMAC is supporting Logan-based filmmaker Elise Lamb on her upcoming creative project – a short film titled Around the Clock, which offers a glimpse into the daily life of carers for the disabled through the lens of a sibling.

The film, based on Lamb’s own childhood in Logan, is about her experience caring for her disabled sister. Lamb developed her writing skills at the National Theatre in London and worked alongside Stephen Daldry on an episode of The Crown.
Her personal experience with her sister saw her cast as casting advisor for A Christmas Carol at The Old Vic in London, for which director Matthew Warchus wanted to cast four disabled actors in the role of Tiny Tim. It was this experience which sparked the inspiration within Lamb to write a script which would provide inclusion for an artist with a disability.

“This film is very close to my heart – as it is my own personal story and has a very special message. It’s not often that disability is told through the lens of a sibling and told from experience,” she said.

BEMAC is thrilled to be supporting Hymba Yumba Independent School’s Song Line project.

Teacher Trevor Fourmile said Hymba Yumba Song Line is about bridging cultures through music.

“Music has always been an integral part of the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for many years,” he said.

“Song and dance passed down from generations to generation carries the traditions, identity, beliefs and customs.

“This project will help our jarjums to express their stories through music as we have practised in the past and present. This will also help build community resilience and strong connectedness with the wider community.”

The project will target Years 4 and 5 students and be held weekly at Hymba Yumba Independent School. Brass instruments, as well as traditional instruments like the didgeridoo, will be incorporated in the project.

“We’re so excited and looking forward to bigger and greater outcomes for our students (jarjums),” Mr Fourmile said.

On April 30, BEMAC launched free art classes for refugees living in Logan.
BEMAC has engaged multi-disciplinarian Italian fine artist Ivanoe Fodaro, whose work has been exhibited around the world, to deliver the program.
Since receiving his formal training as a fine artist in Italy, Ivanoe has taught, worked and exhibited all over the world. His experience encompasses working as the Art Director and Painting Team Manager of D’Après Art Museum in Rome, as well as developing and teaching an art instruction course at Rockhampton TAFE Art Department.

BEMAC Director Evan Alexander said as the arts arm of south east Queensland’s award-winning not-for-profit refugee resettlement agency AccessBEMAC was stoked to be delivering arts classes to newly arrived refugees.

“Research into the positive effects engaging in creative and arts-led practices has on the psychological, physical and social wellbeing of refugees undergoing resettlement in a new country after the traumatic experience of displacement is unequivocal,” he said.

The five-week program which will see participants introduced to painting and a number of techniques employed in the practice will culminate in an event whereby the finalised work of each participant will be showcased.
Creative development continues to culminate in 2020 touring production

One of JUTE Theatre’s much loved and most experienced actors Mark Sheppard will be joined by an esteemed cast of creative professionals in Cairns next week for the second of two, creative development workshops for new work, Synaesthesia Part II (working title).

Mr Sheppard’s play, Synaesthesia Part II forms part of JUTE Theatre Company’s Dare to Dream touring series for 2020 that follows in the ground-breaking footsteps of Proppa Solid, Bukal and this year’s The Longest Minute.
With support from Arts Queensland and the Tim Fairfax Family Foundation, Dare to Dream is an initiative (launched in 2017) using theatre as a platform to boost cultural engagement and confidence in Queensland’s Far Northern regional and remote Indigenous communities.

An experienced clown whose credits include Circus Oz, Mr Sheppard will build on last year’s first creative development – an improvisational workshop in September 2018 – to progress the production with support of dramaturg and director Briar Grace Smith and Fiona Wirrer-George, performers Rita Pryce, Cleopatra Pryce and Warren Clements and designers Simone Tesorieri and Simona Cosentini, Kim Bowers, Merindi Schrieber.

The second creative development will take be undertaken over two weeks from Tuesday 7 May to Friday 17 May.  The production’s premiere season will be presented at CoCA during CIAF 2020 before touring to 10 remote Far North Queensland communities commencing 31 July 2020.

Creative producer for JUTE Theatre Company Yvette Walker said she is delighted to work with Mr Sheppard and the creative team to progress what she says is a multi-artform play employing text, music, dance, circus and scientific theory to explore a world of sensory connections where the past is a cornerstone for the future.

“The narrative includes family recipes for chicken soup, memories of a Cairns childhood, the taste of the first mango of the season, the cleansing of the Barron (Walsh) River and the flourishing of the amazingly sweet Black Bream in a production that captures all five senses of audience members.

“Synesthesia Part II celebrates the richness of First Nations’ cultures, the legacy within Aboriginal families and the resilience of communities. It will enhance the sense of cultural identity and connectedness in Indigenous communities, while offering non- Indigenous audiences’ access to Queensland First Nations stories,” Ms Walker said.

Synesthesia Part II emerges from Mark Sheppard’s pioneering performance work with young people in remote Indigenous communities. WAAPA-trained, Mark has worked with Yirra Yaakin, Kooemba Jdarra, JUTE Theatre Company and Circus Oz. His one-man show, Chasing the Lollyman, toured extensively around Australia and established Mark as a unique voice in the national landscape. Over several years of touring (with Chasing the Lollyman and Proppa Solid), Mark has developed a strong sense of creating work with and for young Indigenous people that inspires them to dare to dream.
