Welcome to the Vegan Organic Network (VON) Newsletter!

‘Veganic’ is a combination of two words ‘vegan’ and ‘organic’. It’s a guarantee that food is grown in an organic way with only plant based fertilizers, encouraging functional biodiversity so pesticides are not necessary. No chemicals, no GMO and no animal by-products in any part of the chain.

Veganic food is resilient to the largest problems facing humanity i.e. environmental destruction, pollution of the sea and air and soil erosion.

Veganic otherwise we are dependent on animal agriculture, chemicals, pesticides and herbicides.

In essence, veganic is a logical step beyond organic for those who seek safe food grown in a sustainable manner.

Biocyclic Vegan Agriculture – Organic Farming the Vegan Way

Are fruits and vegetables really vegan?

This question seems superfluous at first glance, since it is generally assumed that these staple foods are vegan per se because they do not contain any animal ingredients. However, if one looks at the common production of fruits and vegetables, it can be seen that, especially in organic farming, organic inputs of animal origin such as manure and slaughterhouse waste (blood meal, bristle meal, feather meal and horn chips) are often used for fertilisation. The production of fruits and vegetables is therefore often associated with the various harmful effects of animal husbandry including animal suffering, which a growing number of consumers actually want to avoid.

The Biocyclic Vegan Standard, a new approach to organic farming based on ethical and sustainability principles.

'It's a groundswell': the farmers fighting to save the Earth's soil

Farmers across the world are ditching their ploughs to protect ecosystems – and it’s working.

John Cherry bends down and takes a handful of soil in his hands, brings it up to his face and breathes deeply.

“You can smell when it is good,” he says, poking it with a finger. “This smells of roots … there is a rich, organic quality to it. It is a good smell.”

Cherry is one of a growing army of UK farmers who are turning their back on the plough – and centuries of farming tradition – in an effort to tackle a little-noticed but potentially devastating environmental crisis: the degradation of the Earth’s soil.

85% Of Land Needed To Produce UK Food Supply Used For Animal Products

  • Food has a land footprint, i.e. the total amount of land required to produce it. The land footprint of animal based foods includes the land where the animal lives but also the amount of land used to grow the foods it needs to eat.
  • The land footprint used to produce the UK food supply is made up by 62.7% grasslands for animal agriculture, 21.8% for cropland grown for animal feed and 15.5% for crops grown for direct human consumption.
  • Only 48% of protein and 32% of calories consumed by the UK are provided from animal based products grown using 85% of the UK’s total food supply land footprint.

Human Society Under Urgent Threat From Loss Of Earth's Natural Life

Scientists reveal 1 million species at risk of extinction in damning UN report.

Human society is in jeopardy from the accelerating decline of the Earth’s natural life-support systems, the world’s leading scientists have warned, as they announced the results of the most thorough planetary health check ever undertaken.

From coral reefs flickering out beneath the oceans to rainforests desiccating into savannahs, nature is being destroyed at a rate tens to hundreds of times higher than the average over the past 10m years, according to the UN global assessment report.
