We are hosting our second annual get-together to kick-off the season on Saturday June 22nd at 1 p.m. at Barbara LeVasseur’s cottage 1508 Invader Lane, Redstone Lake.
  • Let’s Go Green - bring your mug, we’ll supply coffee, tea, water and sweets.
  • No need to bring food but do bring your enthusiasm and ideas
  • Bring your folding chair
  • Book Exchange - bring a book you have read and exchange for another

Last year we started up a variety of clubs and hope to continue them this year. We are always looking for new club suggestions and of course we all love it when someone sends us an email asking if we would like to get together for kayaking or a hike, maybe for a cup of coffee.  Last year the wine club and hiking club were very popular as was an impromptu gathering on the dock one sunny afternoon.

Have an idea for a club?  Bring your suggestion along and let’s have fun.  We will have sign-up sheets for various activities like we did last year.

We hope you can make it on June 22nd please RSVP to Barb at namaycush@idirect.com by June 15.

If you can’t make it but would like to join Ladies of the Lakes just drop us a note at membership@redstonelake.com

Healthy Shorelines

One last spring sale of native plants

From the Haliburton Master Gardener website:

“The annual Master Gardener plant sale will be held on Saturday June 1, 2019.  For the first time it will be held at Head Lake Park in the Village of Haliburton. As usual, from 10:00 a.m. until sold out. It will be first come, first serve so come by 9:00 a.m. to get your number and then browse plants as we organize the sale.   Some of our offerings include hostas, grasses and some native plants such as Rudbeckia and coneflower.

“Location:  Park in the parking lot located at Head Lake Rotary Park . Click link for map. This is at the corner of Highland St. and York St. near the flashing light in town. There is lots of parking.”

This might be a good time to start thinking about whether or not you are hosting invasive plant species on your property. They often look good, and can grow like wildfire because they have no natural predators. But in doing so, they can displace and block out native plants that are compatible with other plants and wildlife. This booklet from FOCA explains why invasive species (not just plants) are a problem, and this booklet from the Ontario Invasive Plant Council will help you recognize problem plants, and suggest alternatives.

Septic Re-Inspection Program

If you are planning to have your septic pumped in 2019, consider the following:
  1. Have your septic inspected when it is pumped to avoid having it pumped and inspected again before 2022, to meet Municipal Regulations
  2. Experts recommend having septic systems pumped every 3-5 years.
  3. Dysart Municipality requires all lakefront properties on Redstone, Little Red, Pelaw, Bitter, Burdock and Coleman Lakes be pumped and inspected before 2022.
  4. Inspection must be carried out by a qualified inspector. See RLCA website for a list of qualified inspectors. https://www.redstonelake.com/main_newsletters.asp
  5. Group discounts are available. Talk to your neighbours. Check with your Inspector for pricing and discounts.
  6. The CHA Video on the RLCA website provides an excellent, easy to follow video on the operation and maintenance of your septic system.
  7. If you have questions, email Bob at watersteward@redstonelake.com

Membership Drive June 2019:
  • Volunteers desperately needed from the East Side of Redstone Lake!  We especially need some people from Fisherman's Trail, Baybreeze, Bumpyroad, Merganser and Larmouth Lane.  We plan to deliver 600 packages this year to reach all occupied properties on our 6 lakes but we will need your help!  If you didn't receive a Membership Drive Package at your cottage door last year that was because we didn't have a volunteer to deliver in your area.  Please consider if you can spare the time to drop off 10 or 20 bags to your neighbours.  You can tell me how many you are prepared to deliver.
  • If you can spare an hour or 2 to deliver in your cottage area during the month of June please drop me a note at membership@redstonelake.com  Your help is greatly appreciated.
  • Delivery of packages will be a little later than previous years.  Look for your package during the month of June.  This year we are including the new Lake Health Report by CHA (Coalition of Haliburton Property Owners)

RLCA is a member of FOCA (Federation of Ontario Cottagers' Associations) and as such we benefit on DEALS & DISCOUNTS from their corporate partners:
  • Coleman Canada 40% discount on online orders with the member code

  • DockinaBox 10% discount on dock frame systems or boat lifts
  • InvisiRail 7.5% discount on glass rail systems for home or cottage

  • Cottage Life Magazine special FOCA rate $24.95 (1 year, incl. digital access)

Here's an interesting bit of history on the old adage "worth an arm and a leg".  It comes from Williamsburg, Virginia where local painters would charge more for painting their subject's appendages than for simply a face portrait.
