Dear <<First name>>,
European development ministers are meeting in Brussels later this week to look at ways to keep the momentum for achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and link it to the implementation of the Paris Agreement on climate change. It seems like a very timely and perfectly sensible thing to do, but it does not make implementation any easier.
Connecting the three pillars of sustainable development – economic, environmental and social – as spelled out in the 2030 Agenda, has proven much tougher than people might have anticipated. In a brief for the Barcelona Centre for International Affairs (CIDOB), James Mackie has outlined some of the main challenges of policy coherence (a crucial element of Sustainable Development Goal 17) and suggested how to overcome the lull of progress.
The link between climate change and the Sustainable Development Goals goes well beyond Goal 13 on climate action. Hanne Knaepen talks to us about Lake Naivasha in Kenya and the issues related to the use and management of water. Here as well, the alignment of policies for different sectors such as agriculture, waste management and climate responses is imperative.
Finally, the European Think Tanks Group needs your help. More information below.
All the best,
Virginia
