Stopping the Summer Slide!

Dear Families,

Summer is coming up quickly!  The end of the school year is a great time to celebrate all of the learning that kids have done over the last 9 months.  However, as we gear up for break, there are some things to consider:

The Bad News: Did you know that students lose an average of 2.5 months of math skills and 2 months of reading skills over the summer?  Also, after a summer with no academic work, a student takes about 2 months to get back on track with their learning.

The Good News: With only 2-3 hours per week of engaged learning over the summer, students will maintain, or even grow their skills!  The easiest and most effective form of this learning is through good old reading! Please sign up for the library’s summer reading program for kids, and/or encourage your child to read and/or read to or with your child.

More Good News: To help our families fight the so-called summer slide, our teachers have worked hard to put together packets of activities for students and families to complete this summer.  They have been very thoughtful about creating activities that are both fun and engaging for students, and ideas for families to work together to support student learning.

We are excited to welcome folks tonight for Stop the Summer Slide family night (for learning and food!), and will be handing out copies of the summer packets to families who attend.  If you are unable to attend, but interested in receiving a summer packet, please ask your child’s teacher!  We will be happy to provide you with a copy.

Please note this is not a homework packet! It is designed to give students and families a tool to use over the summer to help stop the learning regression that can occur.  It should be fun and relatively easy for students to complete.  Additionally, any students who complete their packet can bring it back in the fall for a prize!

Thank you and your students for all of your work this year, and please join us in stopping the summer slide!

Parents for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)

Our upcoming meeting on Tuesday, May 21 from 7 to 8:20pm. (Email anniebielecki@gmail.com for more details and the meeting location, which will be a Highline family’s home). At this meeting, we’ll be discussing an article recommended by the Center for Racial Justice in Education (CRJE): https://everydayfeminism.com/2014/08/talk-to-kids-about-race/. All parents and community members are welcome! And even if you can’t attend the meetings, please take some time to read this article about why it’s important to talk to our kids about race.

Parents for DEI is a club for Highline Academy parents looking to further our communities' understanding of race and racism.  Inspired by a workshop given by the Center for Racial Justice in Education through Highline in January, Highline's Parents For DEI meets to create an open and accepting space to share stories, concerns, opinions, and ideas for understanding racial inequity.  Our Mission is to celebrate our diversity and to foster improved equity and inclusivity in our schools and communities through awareness building, shared resources, and policy changes.

Don't forget to return Family Satisfaction Surveys

The Family Satisfaction Survey (formerly known as the Parent Satisfaction Survey) went home this week and is an opportunity for families in Denver Public Schools to reflect on their experience with our schools, share feedback and help us make improvements to our learning environments.

Please take the time to fill out this important anonymous survey.  The surveys can be mailed back in the prepaid envelope provided or brought back to the school.  Thank you for all your support.

Free Summer Meals

The Summer Meal Program refers to the free meal program offered during summer months that provides nutritious meals to all children at no charge, regardless of income, race or religion.

Just as learning does not end when school lets out, neither does the need for good nutrition. Children who aren’t hungry learn better, act better and feel better. The Summer Food Service Program helps children get the nutrition they need during the summer. During the school year, more than 18 million children receive free and reduced-price meals at school. During the summer, that number drops to about 3 million.

Summer Food Service Programs provide nutritious breakfast and lunch meals to all children and, when coupled with recreation and tutoring programs, are of a great benefit to them.
Please click HERE to see where you can get free summer meals
