Deadlines

Jun 14: Board of Directors Application

Hello and Good afternoon everyone! My name is Luis and I am one of your FAI Board members with a few important announcements.

First, it is with sadness that we have accepted the resignation of Duane Edmonds from the Board of FAI effective immediately.

Second, that means that we are going to have a special election to fill the remainder of Duane's term immediately. The period for applications opened May 28 and run through Fri, Jun 14 (11pm).

The voting period will start at noon on Mon, Jun 17, and run for one week through noon on Mon, June 24. Thank you and see you all at the Alchemy Art Fundraiser!

Apply to be a board member for Flashpoint Artists Initiative: https://forms.gle/BaAbgDe8ns2A1VCf8,

Vote for the board member here Jun 17–Jun 24. (The form will not open until then.)

Jun 16: Event Committee Application

Our burns are run by the Event Committee, which consists of an Event Lead, an Event Co-Lead, and Leads for the following departments:

  • Co Event Lead
  • Safety Department
  • Information Department
  • Operations Department
  • Art Department
  • Safety Assistant/Shadow
  • Info Assistant/Shadow
  • Ops Assistant/Shadow
  • Art Assistant/Shadow

If you’ve ever wanted your own radio and golf cart, now’s your chance—apply to be considered for one of the Department Leads, and never walk to Parking again!

What’s actually involved? It depends on the position, but the time commitment is essentially that of a part time job. Some weeks might only be about 4–5 hours, others could be as much as 15–20ish. The department leads are responsible for overseeing their teams (https://euphoriaburn.com/teams), and working with their leads to help bring their team ideas to fruition, additionally being proactive with getting info out to the community. Onsite there will be a schedule and each lead will work approx 3–4 shifts depending on how everyone prefers to do shifts and whether they're 8– or 12-hour.

Questions? Direct those to the FAI board: board@flashpointart.org

Now’s your chance—apply to host a public square at Alchemy! The application form will open Jun 20 and will close Jul 11.

Opportunities

July 13: The Alchemy Art Fundraiser

If you’ve never been to an Alchemy Art Fundraiser, you’re missing out on an afternoon/evening of fun—and art! All the hippies who have applied for art grants will set up their proposals like some really weird middle school science fair, and you get to give them money.

The way it works is simple: You buy a ticket ($10), with the option of leveling up your ticket purchase for extra fun swag. Every dollar you give goes to the artists, and you get to vote on where those dollars go by marking your ballot.

There’s also an art auction with some pretty phenomenal work by your fellow hippies. (See donation info below.)

As always, we need hippies to volunteer. Go sign up to help

If you can't make it to the live fundraiser, you can still vote for your favorites by donating through the online fundraiser, details TBA.

For more details, visit http://alchemyburn.com/artfundraiser

July 13, 3:30–8:00, 701 West Howard Ave, Decatur, GA 30030

Art Donation Info

We are trying something new this year! 50% of each sale will go to the buyer to vote for projects and 50% will go to the artist who donated the piece to vote for projects. The donating artist must be present or elect a representative who is present at the event to cast the votes. Otherwise, 100% will go to the buyer to vote with. Please email artfundraiser@alchemyburn.com if you are interested in donating!

Burner Tips

On Facebook recently, King Max (Where the Wild Things Are) asked us to describe burns in one sentence. These are some of the responses:

  • A camping/arts festival modeled on Burning Man. (Ian)
  • I would tell my father it was a self sufficiency weekend with art projects but tell my friends a ton of weirdos in the woods burning shit down, wearing cool costumes and doing amazing things. (Chandini)
  • It is a open enclosure psychedelic human art zoo where the visitors are also the attractions. (Ernie)
  • Folk coming together to support each other’s awesome. (Phil)
  • It is like stepping through a portal to another world where everything you are is encouraged and loved as everyone exists in an infinite timeless space of ultimate connectedness giving light to the true celebration of life expressed.  (Tony)
  • A burn is giant participatory and expressive social experiment undertaken by a vivid and varied community. (Andrea)
  • A giant adult playground with almost no rules. (Jack, to which Max replied, “Until a ranger takes away your megaphone.”)
  • Leave your expectations at home. Bring extra socks. (Jonathan)
  • A temporary autonomous zone created by all those within it which values and promotes creativity and community through every medium available, while minimizing the influences of authority and the outside world. (Meshuggeneh)
  • It's finally feeling accepted enough to drop your facade, surrounded by art and awesome people. (Mina)
  • It's everything you didn't know that you didn't want to see, along with everything you didn't know you did want to see pressed into a festival. (Patrick)
  • An amazing life changing experience in a accepting and welcoming community. (Joshua)
  • Artists entertaining artists. (Russell)
  • It’s for people that like ideas, and helping learn to take care of themselves. And we burn things and blinky lights (J West)
  • Part interactive art camping retreat, part live action adventure game, taking place in a bubble of existence separate from default reality, with entirely different rules and guidelines, based primarily on self expression, sharing passions, expanding consciousness, and celebrating impermanence (hence the burning of all the things). (Christy)
  • It’s like living inside an ever evolving series of increasingly more unlikely and complicated memes while someone in a unicorn horn with nothing else on pours you mixed drinks and slaps your ass. And stuff is on fire for some reason. (Leif)
  • Most events have 50 people working, putting off a party for a 1000 people, burns have a 1000 people making a party for a 1000 people. (Shawman)
  • They are brutally beautiful experiences. (Jarl)
  • You can take off all the masks you wear in your day-to-day life and just be the person you are and you will be accepted for that, or you can pick and choose different masks to wear at different times, and you'll be accepted for that, too, all while finding out that you're stronger and more capable than you ever imagined and you can deal with a lot more discomfort than you ever thought you could; also it quite literally saved my life when I was in a really dark place and I'll be forever grateful for all the ways burns have helped me to grow and blessed to be able to attend them. (Amy)
  • Adults who haven't forgotten how to play. (Meester)

Profiles

This month we’re featuring a member of burn leadership: Guac was the Team Lead for Lamplighters this past Euphoria. It was his first time participating in burn leadership, and we asked him about stepping up.

How long have you been burning, and what camps have you been associated with?

Three years! Since the No Burn Alchemy! [Ed: Alchemy 2016] I have been to the two Alchemies since then, too! I camp with Queers Next Door/Friendly Neighborhood Queers and I’ve camped with One Nightstand in the past.

Why do you burn?

To participate in a non-commodified space based on openness and respect. Also I feel a deep community at the burn!

Why did you decide to step up to a leadership role?

There was a need, I had the time and I felt that I had the experience to pitch in and help out.

What was best part about leading Lamplighters?

Just seeing how the community really came together to participate in the ritual. Once people saw that we were starting the procession I had people come up and ask to volunteer. It was validating to see that.

What was the least best part about it?

Pulling out 5-foot-long rebar from the ground.

What advice would you give any hippie thinking about joining burn leadership?

Be as organized as possible and go to as many meetings and be as communicative as possible with your department leads because the real work starts when you’re on the land.

Anything else you’d like to tell the hippies?

Happy Burninating!
