Rep. John Lewis Gives Commencement Address Rep. John Lewis, an iconic leader of America's Civil Rights Movement and since 1987 a member of the US Congress, is the keynote speaker at The City College of New York's 173rd Commencement Exercises on May 31. Instrumental in the 1963 March on Washington, Lewis gained national recognition as an advocate of nonviolent protest and will always be remembered as a leader of the voting rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, en route to the state capital of Montgomery on March 7, 1965, thereafter known as "Bloody Sunday." Lewis will receive the honorary degree Doctor of Humane Letters, and CCNY alumnus Edward Plotkin, Class of 1953, will receive the honorary degree Doctor of Science for his distinguished career in civil engineering.
CCNY Stem Institute Expands
Established in 1992 to serve Northern Manhattan high-school students, City College's STEM Institute is growing significantly to provide after-school programs at the George Washington Educational Campus in Washington Heights, in addition to expanding Saturday courses and summer programs at CCNY. All programs are free. The goal of the Institute is to prepare high-school students, particularly women and underrepresented minorities, to successfully pursue college degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and in turn develop STEM careers. New York City Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez, CCNY '94, was instrumental in securing city funding for this expansion of educational opportunities.

Fulbright Scholar Probes Cancer Recurrence
Why do some cancers reappear years after chemotherapy or surgery? This remains a medical mystery that researchers like David S. Rumschitzki, Professor of Chemical Engineering at CCNY's Grove School of Engineering, are working to unravel. As the recipient of a 2019-2020 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Grant, Rumschitzki will pursue collaborative research at Israel's Technion, with a particular focus on skin cancer and breast cancer recurrence.
CCNY Junior Wins Top Science Scholarship Mathiu Perez Rodriguez, a CCNY Honors Program student majoring in Biochemistry within CCNY's Division of Science, has been awarded a 2019 Barry Goldwater Scholarship. The federally funded scholarship is America's premier award for undergraduates majoring in math, science and engineering and planning to pursue research careers in these fields.
I Am CCNY: Oscar Villavicenzio, Class of 2019
Major:Advertising/Public Relations, because I love communications and the evolving nature of the industry. CCNY Highlights: The bonds and friendships I have cultivated with my fellow colleagues and professors. What I have learned from both of them will be invaluable in my future endeavors. Side Hustle: I'm conducting research for a website that will incorporate all of the top NYC advertising and PR agencies and the internships they offer. My goal is to make it a crowdsourced internship page where everyone can find opportunities just for them. We all deserve to have access to what this great city offers.
