Autumn colours are painting the landscapes all around us this time of the year. It’s almost as if harvest 2019 is long gone. It was the shortest and most intense harvest I've experienced.
At first we waited for the grapes to fully ripen – a direct result of the cooler spring we’ve seen in Sept/October 2018 - then, suddenly, everything was ready all at once! It felt like an intense chess game; having to make space for a cultivar to come into the cellar, just to repeat the same action the very next day.
As a result of the few drier years we've experienced in the past, I do think we will see intense colour and aromas on the reds as the wines continue to mature. Although yields were smaller, the quality is exceptional, that’s for sure!
This time of the year I'm grateful and relieved that the wine is in the barrels. Now winter - a period of rest and maturing for these wines - can continue. The vines will soon lose all their leaves, but that’s good and necessary, ensuring that enough strength and nutrition is build up for the next vintage.
