Use your voice to raise engineers’ priorities in Local Elections 2019

Dear <<Prefered Name>>

In my inaugural speech as your President, I committed to visit our Regions and to also engage with the Local Authority (LA) engineers. Engineers are creative problem-solvers in our city and county councils. They are at the forefront of social housing delivery, water services, transport facilities, environmental management and much more. It has been heartening to witness the courtesy and appreciation extended on every occasion by the engineers and the whole staff at the LA offices to the President of Engineers Ireland. These encounters have been some of the most enjoyable aspects of my term as President.

The Local Elections, coming up on 24 May, provide an opportunity for our membership to have their voices heard across 31 Local Authorities on issues that matter to them at a local level.  As the voice of the profession, Engineers Ireland has identified five priorities for the Local Elections. As a member, we hope you will use your voice in your community and to canvassers, to highlight these priorities which include taking urgent climate action and promoting connected and sustainable travel facilities and services. More information is provided to you below.

I look forward to attending our Future Energy Forum in our One Society, Our Contribution series taking place next Thursday 16 May at Dundalk Institute of Technology.  Barry Hyland, Chair of our North East Regional branch writes about the Forum below.  The event will explore the future direction of energy supply and demand, and its effect on your home, business and finances.

Our AGM takes place at 22 Clyde Road, Dublin 4 on Thursday 30 May, 6:30pm start. The result of the ballot for our Council election will be announced that evening.  The opening of the vote to cast your ballot will take place from next week, for all eligible members, and I would encourage you to vote. It is a wonderful honour to serve on our Council and to represent our profession. This is your opportunity to have your say and vote for the candidates who have put themselves forward.

As my term of office as your President comes near its end, I would like to take this opportunity to say a heartfelt ‘thank you’ for the extreme honour and privilege it has been to serve as your President for the 2018/2019 term.

With best wishes

Peter Quinn

President of Engineers Ireland

Engineers Ireland sets out five priorities for Local Elections 2019

Engineers play a pivotal role in our city and county councils. They are at the forefront of social housing delivery, water services, transport facilities, environmental management and much more. These engineers are represented in our Local Government Division, one of the 32 Regional branches, Engineering divisions and societies into which we organise our 25,000 members.
Following engagements with our local authority engineers and others, Engineers Ireland has identified five priorities for candidates in the Local Elections on 24 May:

  • Provide safe and sustainable homes and communities
  • Implement the objectives of Project Ireland 2040
  • Take urgent climate action
  • Promote sustainable and connected travel facilities and services
  • Get ready for the future of work, life and learning

As a member of Engineers Ireland, we hope you will use your voice in your community, to canvassers and at the polls to highlight these priorities. You can download a brochure outlining key actions and supporting evidence (printed copied are available from our offices at 22 Clyde Road).

The President of Engineers Ireland, Peter Quinn, spent two decades working for Monaghan County Council and has been visiting local authority engineers all over the country in recent months. Read his perspective on the election in the next edition of the Engineers Journal.

Engineers have a key role to play in Ireland’s transition to a sustainable, carbon-free society through the development of renewable energy technology and innovations. Join the North East region at our Future Energy Forum next Thursday 16 May from 4:45pm at the Whitaker Building at Dundalk Institute of Technology. Here is a message from the Region’s Chair Barry Hyland (pictured on the left at our Annual Ball in January with his wife Yvonne Hyland, Pauline Warde, Vice Chair, of our Northern Regional Branch and Robert Eadie, Chair of our Northern Regional Branch):
