Electronics, 3D-Carving, and Molding & Casting at Fab Labs

ShopBot's Sallye Coyle has been busy helping educators from the South to the West during the early part of 2019. As a part of a series of Professional Development workshops at Fab Labs, she did some cross-platform training to introduce faculty and lab managers to equipment and techniques that often go underutilized.

Her most recent blog post speaks of a variety of locales (Mississippi, Louisiana, and California), various materials (Arduinos, copper circuits, fabric, wood, and paraffin, to name a few), and the successes all of the attendees experienced while attending these Professional Development workshops. Read more details about it all on the ShopBot blog.

ShopBot in Cleveland - Spring Make 19

Spring Make 19 took place in Cleveland, Ohio April 25th-27th at the Tenk West Bank, a converted warehouse space. The event was intended as a place for people to hone their craft and build their brand.  Filled with workshops, keynote speakers, and classroom sessions, the 150 attendees made there way around the event absorbing information and advice like sponges.

As a first time sponsor at the event, ShopBot introduced CNC to those that stopped by our exhibitor space. Others already knew who ShopBot was thanks to the work of one of the keynote speakers, Jimmy Diresta. Those people wanted to see the tool(s) he was using up close and personal.

ShopBot in the Field: The Theatre Program at University of Utah

Kyle Becker and his students in the Theatre Program at University of Utah assembled their ShopBot PRSalpha themselves. Kyle then opted to have ShopBot send someone to conduct a customized training on-site. Enter Sallye Coyle. She traveled to Salt Lake City to work with five members of their faculty and staff in the areas of set design, lighting, and props. For two days, they sampled different materials (acrylic, foam, MDF, Sintra PVC and wood), ran different kinds of tool paths (2D, VCarve and 3D-Carving), and explored bits, feeds, and speeds. Troubleshooting mechanical issues (like a bad collet) with their particular machine, and learning to transfer designs among CAD software programs familiar to them were all part of the training.

Kyle reports that he chose ShopBot over other CNC options because of its great reputation for tool quality, customer service, and support. Another plus? The freight elevator to the basement floor scene shop is small, so being able to transport the CNC parts in a crate and then assemble it in place was a big asset.

Digital Fabrication for Educators - Now With Three Specialized Sessions This Summer

Digital Fabrication for Educators is currently scheduled for three sessions this summer: June 13-15, 2019; July 18-20, 2019; and August 8-10, 2019.  Each of the three sessions held this summer will utilize a different software application. The June session will be VCarve Pro, the July session will be Fusion 360, and the August session will be Aspire

This 2.5-day workshop begins with design and machining using ShopBot tools, then moves into cross-platform training involving other digital fabrication tools (i.e. laser cutters and 3D printers). There is also time specifically allotted for independent work and collaborative development.

Give us a call at 888-680-4466 to sign up for one of the workshops today!

Tip of the Month

ShopBot Buddy® Spoilboard Layout

Since the spoilboard for a Buddy table is larger than the cutting area, it is very useful to carve an indication for the actual cut area of the machine into the spoilboard. In order to do this, go into your CAD software and draw a rectangle the size of your Buddy's cut area. This should be either 24" x 48" or 24" x 32". Then use that rectangle to set-up a profile toolpath, using a V-bit that has a cut depth of .03. Profile cut on the line and this new rectangle will show you where to register parts at the correct 0,0 location on your machine moving forward.

Beauty and the Bolt

Maker Monday. Mandala Monday? (Ignore the fact that it's not Monday. I wanted an alliteration. 😂) Here's a quick @shopbottools Handibot project I threw together in an hour or two this afternoon! Made a 20° pattern in illustrator and replicated it around, vcarved, then polyurathaned (so the paint wouldn't seep), acrylic painted, sanded, and finished! Check out our story for more of the process. Is this something you'd want a video of? #makersgonnamake #BrilliantIsBeautiful

For our upcoming production of The Liar, we wouldn't be where we are without our @shopbottools #CNC. It has saved us time and money without sacrificing quality. It's been exciting to discover just what it is capable of.
