CHANGES TO THE TV UNIVERSE FORECAST FOR 2019-2020
Nielsen is out with their 2019-2020 estimates for U.S. television households. That number is 120.6 million homes, an increase of .6% from last year. What accounts for the growth? Hispanic TV households are expected to grow 2.2% over 2018, and the 55+ audience is expected to grow by 1.6% as more baby boomers start to retire. In total, Nielsen estimates a total TV penetration of 96.1% right now, which is actually UP from 2016's 95.7%.

TV viewership has never been higher. But here's the rub...

What "defines" a TV household has also changed in the last few years. Today, a TV household doesn't just include homes that receive over-the-air, cable, telco or satellite TV. It also includes broadband-only homes that receive video exclusively through an internet connection. If broadband-only homes (BBOs) weren't included in the TV household report, the trend would be downward, with TV penetration falling to 86.3%. See below:

The lesson in all of this data is that television penetration is exceptionally high, but also that traditional viewing methods are changing right before our eyes with increasing speed. Just look at the below Nielsen chart released this month that shows the fall of cable viewership since 2010, the rise in over-the-air viewership over just the last 2 years, and the dramatically sharp jump in broadband-only consumption, which is where vMVPDs (YouTube TV, Hulu Live, Sling) and OTT content become so key to keeping those audiences in our local Arizona universe.

BRAND NEW ABA WEBSITE AND DIGITAL RESOURCE PORTAL
We've gone live with a new website at the ABA that we hope makes it even easier to access to the information you need, whenever you need it. We've also eliminated the need to log-in. Among the improvements:

1) We've added simple-to-navigate sections for the ABIP inspection program, PEP, and EAS. If you are looking to visit the “EAS” section of the website (with state-wide emergency plans and contact information), we’re required to keep that section password protected. The access password is Arizona, and the word is case sensitive.

2) There's now an updated news and events portal that shows you all the upcoming ABA webinars, major FCC deadline reminders and key events across Arizona to help build the broadcast business stronger.

3) You'll find a streamlined list of all available member services on the site and a searchable member directory.

4) We've added a new "About Us" section that fully outlines the mission of the ABA for 2019 and beyond.

5) We have a new and improved state-wide broadcasting job board. It's clean and searchable for candidates with the ability for YOU to add lots of information about openings at your station. There is now no need to log in to post! Simply submit your entry for approval from the ABA.

As you’ll read on the website, our #1 priority is to promote and protect the limitless possibilities of Arizona’s free, over-the-air broadcasting industry. We advocate for favorable economic and regulatory conditions, offer training resources that can build current businesses stronger, and invest deeply in projects to help futureproof Arizona broadcasting for both members and the public at large.

Please reach out with questions and suggestions to build this digital presence stronger!

FINAL CALL FOR NOMINATIONS:
ARIZONA BROADCASTERS HALL OF FAME AND NEWCOMER AWARDS

We're in the home-stretch of accepting nominations for two big ABA awards. If you haven't submitted nominations, now is the time to do so!

The first award is the long-standing ABA Hall of Fame, arguably the highest award a broadcaster in Arizona can receive. The Hall of Fame award recognizes leaders who have made a measurable impact in Arizona broadcasting during their career. As in years past, we will honor multiple honorees this fall. The second award is a brand new way for us all to recognize the brightest newcomers (already making waves) who have incredible potential in Arizona broadcasting. Thanks to many requests, we've extended the nomination window for both awards until this Friday, May 24.

CRITERIA AND NOMINATION FORM FOR HALL OF FAME AWARD

CRITERIA AND NOMINATION FORM FOR NEWCOMER AWARD

Awards will be handed out on Tuesday, September 10th at a brand-new lunch we're calling The Arizona Broadcasting Future and Awards Lunch. The event will preview the new technology and consumer broadcasting trends coming to life in 2020, review the state of our industry, talk-out signs of growth and ABA focus areas to help protect business, and award a select few worthy Arizona broadcasters. The announcement of award recipients and the first call for registration will be in June. This year's lunch will be held at Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale.

THIS WEEK: 15 BIG HEADLINES IN OUR BROADCASTING WORLD
1) Where are auto ad dollars going in 2019? This bar chart shows the breakout for TV, radio and digital, and it's clear that digital remains the lion's share of the auto spend.

2) Talk about a quick adoption! Nearly 1/3 of U.S. homes now own a smart speaker, and as a reminder, nearly all of those devices have the ability to stream local radio signals and OTT television content. And guess who's one of the biggest users of smart speakers (and radio)? Moms!

3) The FCC is debating how live captioning might need to evolve for live TV news, including when automated captioning might be ready for primetime.

4) In a move designed to bring more clarity to the process of resolving radio translator inference complaints,
the FCC has voted unanimously in favor of new guidelines on how to process disputes.

5) What's the level of optimism about the future of local radio and TV? RTDNA and Hofstra University just released a new survey.

6) Radio's resiliency will lead to more buyers for radio stations on the market, say multiple experts.

7) Digital audio revenue hit $2 billion in 2018, and get ready for 2019...

8) "Outcoming" selling could be TV's next big thing. Yes, we're talking about a sales model where you pay based on how much the cash register rings.

9) FCC Chairman Pai has asked Congress to give the FCC more control over making quicker moves for broadcast deregulation.

10) The NAB is formally asking the FCC to allow AM broadcasters to voluntarily transition to all-digital radio. The hope here is that the move could help AM stations to retain and attract listeners.

11) We've just finished Upfront week in the TV universe for all of our network-affiliated TV stations. Here's the full fall lineup from the networks.

12) Woah! This is INTERESTING! Customized audio experiences could be coming to a car near you.

13) Here's more confirmation of something TV leaders already see everyday. While there is every reason to believe advertising will continue to be the lifeblood of television, the continuing growth of retransmission consent should remind us that future opportunities are unlimited.

14) Here are 7 video trends expected to dominate the next year. As an added plus, the trends are all displayed as an infographic.

15) It's now officially OFFICIAL! The FCC no longer requires mid-term reports from radio and TV stations.

REMINDER: IS YOUR STATION USING THE NEW ARIZONA EAS SYSTEM?
Big changes that advance Arizona's Emergency Alert System (EAS) are now live. In a partnership between the ABA and DPS, state-level EAS messages are now available via an internet-based delivery system called IPAWS. This new system dramatically improves message quality, reliability and speed for broadcasters. Here's a summary slide deck for review

FCC NOTICE: ANNUAL ARIZONA EEO REPORTS DUE JUNE 1
Arizona broadcasters that have 5 or more full-time employees are coming up on a key deadline for their online public inspection file. As a reminder, your Annual EEO Public File Report is due to be added by June 1, 2019.
