MD has a new Clean Energy Jobs Act
Gov. Larry Hogan is letting the Clean Energy Jobs Act (SB516) take effect without his signature, putting Maryland on the path to 50% renewable electricity by 2030. Articles here, here and here. The law also requires the state to determine the best path to achieve 100% renewable electricity by 2040. The bill retained subsidies for polluting incinerators and paper mills, so we need to work on eliminating that next year. In addition, in a letter to Senate President Miller, the governor criticized the bill and said he plans to focus on a Clean and Renewable Energy Standard (CARES) program. That plan seems to be the opposite of clean energy, however, focusing on nuclear, carbon capture, hydro, and "energy efficient combined heat and power"
-- aka continued use of fracked gas, oil and biogas.

These bills also became law without the governor's signature . . ,
SB285/HB109 prohibits polystyrene foam (Styrofoam) food containers at businesses and schools starting July 1, 2020, making our state the FIRST to put this ban in place. (A similar ban in Maine takes effect on Jan. 1 2021.) Thanks to a new study, we now know that plastic bits from bags and Styrofoam are blowing around in the wind and reaching remote mountains (and our lungs).
Plastic bag fee (HB1166) gives Howard County the authority to impose a fee on single-use plastic bags at checkout. Less Plastic Please is leading the way on next steps.
The governor signed these bills . . .
Community solar pilot program SB520/HB683. This pilot program is extended through July 1, 2022.
Energy storage pilot project SB573. Read about it here.
