MD has a new Clean Energy Jobs Act

Gov. Larry Hogan is letting the Clean Energy Jobs Act (SB516) take effect without his signature, putting  Maryland on the path to 50% renewable electricity by 2030. Articles herehere and here. The law also requires the state to determine the best path to achieve 100% renewable electricity by 2040. The bill retained subsidies for polluting incinerators and paper mills, so we need to work on eliminating that next year. In addition, in a letter to Senate President Miller, the governor criticized the bill and said he plans to focus on a Clean and Renewable Energy Standard (CARES) program. That plan seems to be the opposite of clean energy, however, focusing on nuclear, carbon capture, hydro, and "energy efficient combined heat and power"
-- aka continued use of fracked gas, oil and biogas.

These bills also became law without the governor's signature . . ,

SB285/HB109 prohibits polystyrene foam (Styrofoam) food containers at businesses and schools starting July 1, 2020, making our state the FIRST to put this ban in place. (A similar ban in Maine takes effect on Jan. 1 2021.) Thanks to a new study, we now know that plastic bits from bags and Styrofoam are blowing around in the wind and reaching remote mountains (and our lungs).

Plastic bag fee (HB1166) gives Howard County the authority to impose a fee on single-use plastic bags at checkout. Less Plastic Please is leading the way on next steps.

The governor signed these bills . . .

Community solar pilot program  SB520/HB683. This pilot program is extended through July 1, 2022.

Energy storage pilot project  SB573. Read about it here

Sunrise Movement will #ChangeTheDebate
Webinar set for Wednesday,
May 28, 8 p.m.

On July 30 and July 31, about 20 Democratic candidates for president will debate in Detroit. They want our votes. We want to know that they will protect our lives and act swiftly on climate breakdown. Candidates and the media ignored climate change in 2016, so Sunrise plans to #ChangeTheDebate. Register for the webinar  Sunrise is also organizing house parties to watch the first debates, on June 26 and June 27 in Miami. Sign up for a debate house party.  Sunrise's demands are that candidates sign the pledge to accept no fossil fuels money; support a climate debate, and make the #GND a priority on Day 1. Stay-tuned for updates on HoCoSunrise Facebook, IG @sunrisemvmthoco, TW @SunriseHoCo, this e-newsletter, and by texting DEBATE to 72345.

Climate News

  • Amazon employees call for bold action on climate: "Jeff Bezos, can you see children playing who might have drowned? Towns thriving that might have burned? Species swimming that might have been lost, forever? How will we tell our children that we knew we had such a small window to act decisively, to leave fossil fuels in the ground, but instead we helped Shell, BP, and others find and extract oil more quickly?"
  • Usually El Nino suppresses hurricanes, but the oceans are so warm that NOAA is forecasting a "normal" season this summer, with nine to 15 named storms in the Atlantic and four to eight predicted to become full-blown hurricanes.
  • Sea-level rise could be much more than anticipated — beyond 7.8 feet by 2100 — according to a new study published in the peer-reviewed journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). "If we see something like that in the next 80 years, we are looking at social breakdown on scales that are pretty unimaginable," said lead author Jonathan Bamber.
  • A former chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission says nuclear power is "no longer a viable strategy for dealing with climate change, nor is it a competitive source of power. It is hazardous, expensive and unreliable, and abandoning it wouldn’t bring on climate doom."
  • Instead of “climate change,” The Guardian has begun to use terms such as “climate emergency, crisis or breakdown.” Editor-in-chief, Katharine Viner said, “The phrase ‘climate change’, for example, sounds rather passive and gentle when what scientists are talking about is a catastrophe for humanity.”
