April was a month of preparations for a lot of activities in the forthcoming months, foremost World Oceans Day, 8 June. Mundus maris and its partners are already beavering away at planning the events in several countries. Peer with us behind the scenes and discover what's coming:
- In Brussels, we'll again bring the ocean to the big environment festival already on 2 June.
- In Cameroon, partner Jeauberte Djamou has been already in campaign mode through April to rally schools and public administrations for activities from beach cleaning to an awareness march.
- In Nigeria, the members in the Lagos area are setting up a big event together with University of Lagos, while school and undergraduate mobilisation is part of the celebrations in Akure. A public lecture on “Women and ocean” is also on the book in the Ese Odo Local Government Area.
- Thanks to our partnership with the Friendly of several soccer clubs in Hann, Senegal youths mobilisation will entail not only beach clean-up but also tournaments for girls and boys, among several more activities planned.
- In Buenos Aires, Argentina, the collaboration with the Club de Pescadores and the Belgrano University enables again an entire Ocean Week. Other events are still being discussed.

It's all part of our commitment to contribute to ocean literacy and entice ever larger numbers of people to engage in blue justice and safeguarding the ocean and thus the blue commons from short-term profiteering and destructive practices. Together we can push for governments and big companies to stop dragging their feet and get going with the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, not only in Sunday speeches, but for real. To make that happen, the ocean needs all of us, men, women, people of all ages together. The ocean needs YOU!

UN invites Mundus maris to report about the Small-scale Fisheries Academy
Our support for the SSF Academy in Senegal has not gone unnoticed at the UN and the other UN organisations monitoring the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and always on the outlook for solutions in one place that may be scalable and an inspiration for other people and places. As we are busy planning the test phase of the curriculum and the most appropriate participatory methods to respond to the priority needs identified by the local committee of the initiative, we'll attend the Korea meeting of the Community of Ocean Action end May.

Appreciating the importance of nature protection
Mundus maris member Lydia Mosunmola Adeleke at the Federal University of Technology in Akure (FUTA) has been rallying relentlessly for raising awareness about the importance of ocean protection and more generally about appreciating and respecting nature and biodiversity. Among her many initiatives in the run-up to World Oceans Day was an excursion with youngsters to a Nature Reserve.

The international jury will shortly take up its work for WOD 2019
With the deadline for submissions in the Mundus maris Awards contest to celebrate World Oceans Day 2019 nearing, we are happy to recognise the international jury of volunteers who will pick the best contributions on the topic “Women and ocean”. The age categories are up to 14 years, 15 to 25 years and intergenerational. This year, we also invited project proposals to encourage more continuous commitment for the ocean and the UN motto.

Casting an eye on Mundus maris at the EGU General Assembly in Vienna
The General Assembly 2019 of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) (Vienna, Austria, from 7 to 12 April 2019) was attended by more than 16.000 scientists from some 100 countries. A good half of the participants were below 35 years. Since several years Mundus maris participates at the EGU General Assembly, with active contributions within the Education and Outreach Symposium, including in April 2019. Why is it worth the effort?
