Greetings,

There's the good and the bad, the light and the dark. Just like in art, you need contrast to notice things. That's what today's newsletter is all about.

xo, avw

Hi, Dad. I miss you.

I remember the early morning hours of this day 4 years ago very clearly. After sitting with my dying father for 6 days, his body and spirit mercifully separated. The entire experience around his prognosis and death from the rare and aggressive Triple Hit Lymphoma was the most painful thing my family has endured. One way I processed it was through my first 100 Day Project, 100 Days of People Parts and Flowers, which spanned his final days. I also shared something I hoped to would be helpful, What to Say to Death

My Dad was a remarkable man. His first day on the job as an electrical engineer was the Apollo 1 fire. He retired when the shuttle retired. He put men on the moon and in outer space. He loved the Gators, his 3 granddaughters, and his dog Mars. He would’ve been so tickled to meet his grandson and I regret that he didn’t have the chance. I love you, Pop Pop.

If you’re able, send a little love note to your own Dad today as I remember mine.

New Art!

Three more fancy people in my 100 Days Project. (We’re potty training right now, k? This is what I got.)

Also I'm so so so close to finishing the illustrated version of my birth story.

Listening to other creative people's perspectives.

I finally got around to playing the Aimee Mann and Ted Leo podcast The Art of Process. Their conversation was with Emil Ferris, author of the mind-blowing graphic novel My Favorite Thing is Monsters. She is singular in the expression of her cosmic worldview. There’s something nice about hearing someone go at an interview question sideways.

Wowza, Broadway musicals!

I laid in bed, waking up, and watched a link from the Brass Ring Daily newsletter, Finishing the Hat from the musical Sunday In The Park With George. “Wow, what a voice! Who is this person?” I googled and lo, Mandy Patinkin, of “You killed my father, prepare to die” Inigo Montoya fame, has an INCREDIBLE voice and a long, amazing career. We contain multitudes, folks.

(And just now I discovered that there was a 2017 revival of Sunday in the Park with George starring Jake Gyllenhaal. I continue to be amazed. Humans!)

Deep breath. Deep breath. Deep breath.

Free to forward.

Thanks for reading. I appreciate it. :)
