Opening Note

I am a contemporary oil painter dedicated to the art of traditional oil painting and promoting art education. This Newsetter is intended to provide fellow painters, patrons, and friends with a summary of upcoming events, thoughts, and approaches pertaining to my studio and the art of oil painting.

2019 is looking to be a busy year with family obligations (fun of course), teaching, painting for several upcoming shows, and working hard on the writing, design, and production of my upcoming (coffee table) book release.

Thank you for taking the time to read - your input, thoughts, and suggestions are always welcome -thomaskegler@thomaskegler.com. For information please visit my web site at thomaskegler@thomaskegler.com.

Workshops

Interest in workshops for traditional approaches to painting has been quite strong. I love teaching these courses as I am always meeting wonderful new people. There is always a good mix of brand new painters and seasoned artists. I always walk away learning so much myself from my students about various art making aspects from composition and brush handling, to set up and materials.
As 2019 has turned out to be a very busy time in the studio, I am only able to offer one workshop this year:
• Letchworth State Park - 3 day landscape painting workshop - July 11, 12, & 13th 2019
This workshop is intended for all levels from beginner to advanced.
For details and to sign up, follow this link.
I hope you are able to make it to the workshop... Letchworth Park is amazing!

On the Easel

“Covenant, Jeremiah 17:7-8”
12x24 Oil

This studio painting of a small side falls in Letchworth State Park was a pleasure to paint. I used several field drawings and notes as reference, along with some photos as "reminders" of the day.
The deep cylindrical cliff formation was carved from countless years of water currents from the main stream and falls. If you time your visit to the park just right, you will be treated to rainbows at each of the different falls.

Projects: BOOK Release

I am currently immersed in the production my first book "The Spirit and the Brush" to be released this Fall. The contents this 9x12 coffee table book will be a combination of scriptural writings and painting images. Each day of the year will have a daly devotional read and a painting to contemplate. This book will be dedicated to my late wife Kimberly. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to benefit Catholic Charities and various other not for profit and environmental organizations.
The anticipated release date is November 2019. Details to come!

Shop Talk

Water-washed Walnut Gel by
Art Treehouse

I am always experimenting with new products... especially in an effort to make my studio less toxic.
I have been enjoying this new gel medium available here:
https://arttreehouse.com/artstore/product/walnut-painting-gel/
When used sparingly, it has a wonderful working consistency for both an everyday medium to add to oil paints, as well as a glazing medium.

Videos

In an attempt to encourage other artists to endeavor in the landscape tradition, I have produced two videos for sale. These are much more comprehensive than my workshops and have there added benefit of being able to play them back and pause them as desired.

Final Thoughts
Get out and paint - it is good for the soul.

The more you learn about painting - the harder it becomes since you become more critical.
Remember: drawing pats you on the back with immediate satisfaction, while painting is a humbling experience.. often not revealing the beauty of your efforts until the last few brushstrokes.
90% of the time a painting is in the "awkward looking state", while a drawing looks "good" as you progress. Keep your mind on the final outcome and press on.
