CHAPTER NEWS

Aloha from Na Leo Lani in Honolulu! We’ve had a busy month performing “Goin’ Holoholo,” wherein the chorus takes the audience on an imaginary musical tour of Oahu. From oldies like “Sha-Boom” to local favorites like “Hawaii Aloha,” the audience smile and sing along. Our new officer installation celebration took place on May 5th, so we gave it a Cinco de Mayo theme, Hawaiian style!

What a weekend!  Nineteen members of Sierra Gold had the pleasure of sharing our Open Division package at Regional Contest this year, which was a brand new adventure for all of us!  There was a lot of hard work leading up to our performance.   What a joy it was to hear our two actors deliver their lines flawlessly, leading the chorus into each song.  Wearing black jeans, white blouse and bright green aprons we portrayed a group of singing baristas who have grown tired of brewing fancy coffee drinks all day. Our 10-minute package included 3 songs.  The lyrics, written by Laura Pennington, were changed to incorporate a coffee theme and the trials of these baristas as they prepared decadent coffee drinks day after day.  Our songs included “Back in the Old Brewtine”, “One Fine Day” and “Sunny Side Up”.  Bonnie Stewart played the very excitable, young barista on her first job at the coffee shop and Michelle Hermann was her more mature, know it all side kick.  All of the baristas were planning to audition for famous director, Jim Arns (played by our talented director, Terrie Carrozzella), who was coming to town looking for talented singers for his chorus. If they passed the audition, they would never have to serve coffee again.

One short week before contest weekend many chorus members attended the wedding of Sarah Hietbrink and John Chella.  Sarah is a newer member of Sierra Gold and a nurse who lives in Grass Valley, CA.   What an emotional event seeing Sarah walk down the aisle in her beautiful white gown.  Our own Cindy Wharton, a true artist who has furnished cakes for special events including our very successful dessert auction last August, made Sarah’s wedding cake.  I have to admit that I was first in line to taste a bit of cake.  John’s parents watched the wedding via Facetime and the newlyweds will be traveling to India in October for a second wedding with John’s family.

Along with Sarah, Sierra Gold took FOUR additional new members to contest this year.  Ashley Maher is a teacher who lives in Roseville and Carole Orlando is a real estate agent who lives in Lincoln Hills. Kat Higley also joined us in 2018 and has been a real go-getter, making her a valuable asset to our chorus. Last but not least, Cynthia McCarver transferred to Sierra Gold shortly before contest.  She has extensive Sweet Adeline experience and it is exciting to have her leading our baritone section. We were thrilled to share this first time experience with brand new members!

Our 6th new member, Tamara Dumont was celebrating her wedding anniversary contest weekend and couldn’t attend the event.  Tamara lives on a working family ranch and milks cows, makes cheese and has home schooled her 6 children.  And we have 2 brand new Sweet Adelines joining our ranks this month, checking off the challenge of passing their auditions.  We are so happy to have these ladies as our newest members of Sierra Gold.

The chorus took a week off after contest but will return next Monday for a pot luck dinner celebration.  After the party, we look forward to a new adventure beginning with some new music.

First Time Competitors

Welcome Home to our Bella snowbirds! We miss them so much when they are away for the winter. We are thrilled to have them back home with us!

Although we did not compete this year, Bella has been busy selecting our music for next year’s competition. Bella’s Director and Music Librarian selected 5 packages. The music team narrowed down to 3 packages, then those 3 packages were evaluated (scored) by chorus members to provide a final package.  Our members are excited to begin the journey toward Competition 2020!!!

We have coaching to look forward to mid-May with Martha Segura and also with Will Fox at Harmony College Northwest in June!  WooHoo!!!

We have several “fun”draisers planned which includes another fashion show and Bunco!  Can I get another WooHoo?

In lieu of rehearsal hall rent, each month we have a performance for the residents of the facility in which rehearse.  We love it; they love it.  Win/Win, right? Afterwards, we have a fun rehearsal of quarteting.  We divide up, find a corner of a room, & decide what 2 songs to perform.  We have 15 minutes to pull it together.  The over achievers, add choreo, LOL.  We take turns performing for each other.  It is everyone’s favorite rehearsal night.  It is a little intimidating for Newbies until they realize they are in a safe and loving environment.  It is a wonderful way to build performance confidence and to discover what areas we need to strengthen within our music.   (insert pictures - groups of 5)

Bella Acappella Harmony Chorus is accepting resume’s for a director.  Please email Nancy Phillips: nancyphillips100@gmail.com and Sue McCaleb: msmccaleb@msn.com for more information or to send a resume’.

Last but not least Bella Acappella Harmony Chorus wants to congratulate all of our Region 12 quartet & chorus winners!
Above is a "quarteting" fun rehearsal

I LOVE A PARADE

On April 20th, California HEAT was pleased to participate in the 65th Annual Red Bluff Round Up Parade, a kick off celebration to the largest 3 day professional rodeo event in the country, The Red Bluff Round Up!

Both walking and riding the mile and a half parade route, chorus members waved and serenaded the estimated 10,000 spectators from a decked out trailer pulled by a fiery red pick up truck, passing out “red hot” candy to old and young alike and connecting with the community that California HEAT is so very proud to be a part of.

What a Contest Weekend for Pacific Empire Chorus !!!!!!  Wahoo!!!!
We are so proud and honored to be representing Region 12 in October 2020
in Louisville, Kentucky.
And our win is that much sweeter because Louisville is
Patty Pennycook’s HOME TOWN!!!!
How cool is that?????
