DC gets a Vision test

In response to weeks of traffic-related deaths and protests, the DC Council introduced bills that could change transportation policy significantly.

The Nationals have no excuse

We came into the season with high hopes, but the Nationals are underachieving for a second straight spring. Injuries to Trea Turner and Ryan Zimmerman don’t explain horrible team defense, an undermatched bullpen and a depleted farm.

Best of Washington

CityPaper’s annual list is out. As always, it’s worth a dive.

  • According to readers, H St has the best neighborhood festival, Harpers Ferry is our best day trip, and Bullfrog defended its bagel crown against upstart Call Your Mother.

  • One the editorial staff nailed: Best Chore You’ve Been Putting Off goes to Going to the Dump, which is very fun and free.

  • It’s cool here in the shade: Mayor Bowser won “Best Covert Republican” from Loose Lips. (Perhaps a reach, but if you’re still thinking with the Post board that the city is in thrall to progressives, it should serve as a wake-up call that she won over several possible Council candidates.)

  • If you’re looking for some local representation you may not have seen, check out their pic for “Best Slept On DC Movie.”

  • The Green Zone in Adams Morgan won best new bar, a recommendation we wholeheartedly endorse.

Do...nothing

Hear us out, we're not being lazy. Take a page from the Dutch and embrace niksen, the act of purposely doing nothing. It'll help you avoid burnout and can even boost your creativity.

Walk to Washington (State)

Or cycle, or skateboard, or whatever. Point being: There may soonish be a “Great American Rail-Trail” from the Capitol all 4,000 miles across the country to Seattle. Wyoming and Montana are the states where the most trail remains to be cleared.

Free Yourself → “Da Butt”

Experience Unlimited are best known for their 1988 hit “Da Butt,” with a music video directed by Spike Lee. But the go-go group’s early stuff, like Free Yourself, is getting reissued at a party Sunday at the Eaton Hotel. (Sunday, 4 pm)

Saturday: FUNK! PARADE! TIME!

  • Get hyped with a playlist featuring most of the bands.

  • Kick off the day of funk with a conference and conversations on the #DontMuteDC movement. (10am-2pm)

  • Then the Day Fair starts at 1pm with performances at outdoor stages. Don’t miss the Big Ugly Truck dance party by the Reeves Center. (1-7pm)

  • Take a break and get a spot along U St for the Funk Parade itself (which you can be in!). Performers, music, dancing, amazing outfits and a whole lotta funk. Don’t miss. (5-6pm)

  • Take a break, eat some jumbo slice and rally for the rest of your night out at music venues all along U. Buy yourself a wristband and run free. (7pm on)

Sunday: Mother’s Day

It’s Mother’s Day, so feel free to consider all of these things Mother’s Day activities.

  • For femme feels, head to Le Diplomate where flower shop She Loves Me is popping up a Parisian flower store. (9:30am-3pm)

  • Go to the Femme Fatale pop-up for a small group session on what it means to take up space as a womyn. (10am)

  • The International Spy Museum (now at L’Enfant Plaza, in that building that looks like a giant chinese takeout box from the TRON universe) is having it’s grand opening. Check out the new collection & interactive exhibits. Plus moms get in free. (10am)

  • For the whole family, sign up for a seedling planting and pot decorating sesh. (4pm)

  • Celebrate a real matriarch by going to see Granny and the Boys at Showtime. They’re the house band, so if you fall in love you can go back every week. (7:30pm)

  • Or fuggin go see three-piece thrash metal band Alien Weaponry at DC9. Go with your mom, you crazy kid. (9pm)
