Directors,
Bill C-69, a bill to create a more rigorous environmental and social impact analysis process for natural resource development, is currently with a Senate Committee tasked with getting input from a wide variety of Canadians. While much of the bill is forward thinking, several concerns have been raised from a Newfoundland and Labrador perspective. Specifically, the bill allows the Minster to hold impact study results indefinitely, it requires the same multi-year impact assessment process for short term exploration wells as for production wells even though exploration wells might only be active for 30-90 days, and it pushes our overall assessment period well beyond accepted international standards.
MNL had asked to present to the Senate Committee during their one day of hearings in St. John's, but we were turned down. We will prepare a written submission to the Committee. However, in the meantime, NOIA has asked for permission to use our logo on the letter linked below which they are sending to Prime Minister Trudeau.
We are recommending that MNL approve this use of our logo. NOIA has also asked that we reach out to our members for their support. We are recommending that we wait until after the provincial election to do this.
Please review the letter and let us know if you approve adding our name by Monday morning, May 13.

Thanks,
Craig
