May 2019

A year gone by...

It’s good to be back!...

A word about why: a cancer diagnosis for my son: surgery, radiation, chemo, remission. Finally, a transplant: old bone marrow gone; replaced by new, grown from his own cells. Modern medicine: the stuff of science fiction...for which we are most grateful! (May continuing research find a cure soon...)

Through it all, the beloved Market: steadfast and constant in its unchanging mutability.
Just walking here gives a sense of place.

And now, it’s May...the sun is shining...and there’s a lot going on!

May Events

First up: Mom's Market Day on May 11th.
The Flower Festival, in its eleventh year, will take place on Saturday and Sunday, May 11th and 12th.  But on Saturday, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., all nine acres will also celebrate Mom.

There will be special music under the Market Clock. On the Third Level Downunder, you can meet Mama Sasquatch, and decorate flower cookies on Level Four. The MarketFront will offer art demonstrations and handmade cards for purchase. You can play the Passport Game on Western Avenue: collect a stamp from every store on the Passport, and enter to win over $300 in prizes.

Throughout the Market, there will be photo ops galore.  The new pop-up murals are painted and ready: see if you can find all eight! (The pop-up murals will be up until June 4th. If you miss Saturday’s event, there will still be time to see them.)

On Thursday, May 16th, from 6:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., the Market Foundation will host Fete le Market. This event, held on the MarketFront Plaza and Pavilion, is the Foundation’s annual grant awards ceremony and fundraiser. Guests come to enjoy food, music, company and to celebrate the good work done by all the Market social service agencies. Tickets can be purchased through the Market Foundation.

The first Summer Monthly Night Market is scheduled for Thursday, May 30th, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  The Holiday Night Market was such a success, that the craftspeople are excited to try it again. There will be artists-in-action (“Meet the Producer”), food, live music, and a beer/wine garden: all presented on the MarketFront Pavilion. Additional Night Markets are planned for fourth Thursdays, June through September.

Showbox Update

What happens in the neighborhood impacts the Market, so Friends of the Market continues to track activity surrounding the Showbox.

A public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, June 4th, to hear comment on a proposed six-month extension of the interim expansion of the Pike Place Market Historical District to include the Showbox. The extension will provide extra time to complete the tasks set forth in Ordinance 125650, passed last August. Comments can be sent in writing to Councilmember Lisa Herbold by Monday, June 3rd, or in person at the meeting on Tuesday, June 4th, in the City Council Chambers at City Hall.

On Wednesday, June 5th, Seattle’s Landmarks Preservation Board will consider the nomination of the Showbox for landmark status. The public is invited to make comment, either in writing (submit comments to LPB Coordinator Sarah Sodt by May 30th) or in person (the June 5th meeting starts at 3:30 p.m. at City Hall.)

In order to be considered relevant, the writer/speaker must  address how the Showbox meets one or more of the six designation criteria of the City’s Landmark Preservation Ordinance. Historic Seattle has created a Showbox page that offers more information.

A Stakeholder Workshop on Pike Place Historic District Expansion Study, commissioned by the Department of Neighborhoods, was scheduled for May 1st, but was postponed. The intent was to bring together ten or so stakeholders (individuals with ties to the Historical District) to discuss whether to expand the Historical District boundaries to the east and/or south along 1st Avenue. The Friends of the Market actively sought, and received, an invitation to be among the stakeholders present.

I think, maybe, the consulting firm was surprised by the number of people and groups who want to be a part of this discussion. (As we have seen many times, consideration of Market issues generates a wide variety of passionate opinions!) The consultants plan to reschedule, perhaps at a larger venue.

FOM Board Meeting

A reminder: the Friends of the Market Board will meet on Monday, June 3rd, at 4:30 p.m., in the Goodwin Library. All are welcome!

As always, questions, comments and suggestions are welcome at my email below.
