Trail Work Days!
Saturday, June 1, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Collins Gulf
Join Ranger Dan Wescoat for a day of building trail in beautiful Collins Gulf to celebrate National Trails Day with South Cumberland State Park! We will be working on a reroute leading to Horsepound Falls. We will be hiking approximately 2.8 miles to the worksite through some difficult terrain, and hike out the way we came in to conclude the day. Make sure to bring a sturdy pair of closed toed shoes, as well as plenty of water and snacks to last throughout the day. If you have a favorite pair of work gloves or trail tools, feel free to bring them along. Meet at Collins West Trailhead, Collins W Access Trail, Gruetli-Laager, TN 37339. daniel.wescoat@tn.gov
Saturday, June 1, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Denny Cove
Celebrate National Trails Day with the Southeastern Climbers Coalition & the Access Fund - Jeep Conservation Team at Denny Cove in South Cumberland State Park. We will work on the approach trail to Denny East and continue tackling the staging area at the Buffet Wall. If you can't make it on June 1, the Southeastern Conservation Corps and Jeep Conservation Team will be out there for two more weeks, working on the project and will take volunteers on those days!  Meet at the trailhead at 9 a.m. with water, snacks, and lunch for the day. Be prepared for a 30-minute hike to the site. We'll work until 3 p.m. (Sometimes later, but you're free to come and go as needed).

Zoologist Honored for Sherwood Forest work
His work to save a tiny, endangered snail native to Franklin County has earned a state zoologist a national award.
David Withers, a zoologist with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC), received the 2019 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services’ (USFWS) Recovery Champion Award during a ceremony held Friday, May 17, at the South Cumberland State Park’s Sherwood Forest. The award is given to two individuals each year across the nation.
Withers was recognized for his work to protect the Painted Snake-Coiled Forest Snail, known to live exclusively in the Sherwood area of Franklin County and on the federal endangered species list.
According to Geoff Call, USFWS endangered species recovery coordinator, 840 acres in the Sherwood Forest region is home to 900,000 of the rare, air-breathing land snails. To read more, visit www.friendsofsouthcumberland.org.
Congratulations to David Withers, with deep appreciation from the Friends of South Cumberland for his work in adding an important new area to our Park!

Friends volunteers recently hosted the annual fifth-grade hikes for Grundy County students. The hikes took place over a three-day period. All day hikes were planned and funded by FSC as part of the Every Child in the Park outreach program. After a hike through the Grundy Day Loop in the Fiery Gizzard, students had a picnic lunch and got a tour of the new CCC Camp educational area. Volunteers and park rangers joined forces to make this a memorable hike. Photo by Bob Goodwin.

This year’s Trails & Trilliums Festival showcased our amazing park and provided opportunities to increase awareness about the natural world ... from the kids activities (with over 300 attendees) to guided hikes and presentations geared to adults (which had more than 350 pre-registrants.) New members signed up, new volunteers joined in, and hundreds were introduced to the wildflowers, waterfalls and wonders of South Cumberland State Park!

There are so many to thank for a wonderful weekend!  Please take a minute to learn more about the amazing contributions of our volunteers, our sponsors, our guest speakers, authors, presenters, vendors and entertainers!

Why should you join and support the Friends?

Now protecting more than 30,000 acres, South Cumberland is the largest State Park in Tennessee. Although this is great news, more land, and more visitors, creates new and urgent unmet needs for the park. New trails must be built, and existing trails must be maintained or upgraded. New and expanded parking areas, restrooms, camping and picnic facilities, and directional signage are needed. Invasive pests, like the Hemlock Wooly Adelgid, and invasive plants must be controlled. Guided hikes, seminars and historical re-enactments, including programs for area school children, must be prepared and delivered. And, the work of conserving additional environmentally-significant lands is far from complete.  By becoming a member of the Friends, you can help insure that South Cumberland will always be a safe, well-maintained and amazing place to experience world-class natural beauty!

Q&A:  HOW TO SET YOUR FRIENDS MEMBER SERVICES PASSWORD IF THE EMAIL YOU RECEIVED SAYS “LINK IS EXPIRED”

Q: The email I received from the Friends has a link to activate membership accounts and set up a password.  However, when I clicked the link the message came back that the link is expired.  What should I do?

A: The link has a "time out" on it for security reasons; if it's not opened within a couple of hours after you receive the email, it "expires".  However, if you click on that link, in the email, it will take you to the screen where it says it expired, and on that same page there is also a link titled Request a New Verification or Reset Password link.  Click on that, and it will ask for your email address. Enter your address and then the system will email you a fresh link or code that will allow you to get into the system and set up your account password.
