TITLE:  CAN Quit: Overview and Preliminary Results of the Development of a Facebook Intervention to help Alaska Native People to Quite Smoking

REMOTE PRESENTERS:  Pamela Sinicrope, MPH, DrPH, Assistant Professor of Psychology, Mayo Clinic-Rochester; and Christine Hughes, BS, Assistant Professor of Psychology, Mayo Clinic-Rochester

DESCRIPTION: 
  1. Describe the objectives and aims for the CAN Quite study
  2. Outline the research plan for the Facebook intervention
  3. Present intervention components (ie, Digital stories, videos and Faacebook postings)
  4. Present preliminary results for the development phases of the study
  5. Discuss next steps for a randomized controlled trial to evaluate CAN Quit.
Following the presentation there will be time for questions and discussion.

2019 NANOOK AWARD FOR BEST UAF INVENTION DISCLOSURE:
Institute of Arctic Biology faculty member Dr. Robert 'Trey' Coker was recently awarded the 2019 Nanook Award for the Best UAF Invention Disclosure. Dr. Coker developed MyoEon 1 - Complete Nutrition for Ideal Body Composition, Functional Capacity and Metabolic Health with funding from a National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases grant in partnership with Essential Blends, LLC. MyoEon 1 is a meal replacement that provides free form, vegan-sourced amino acids to protect muscle during weight loss, even in the elderly.

DR. STACY RASMUS APPOINTED CO-DIRECTOR OF THE AI/AN CLINICAL TRASLATIONAL RESEARCH PROGRAM IN ALASKA AND MONTANA:
Dr. Rasmus' primary appointment is with UAF as Director for the Center of Alaska Native Health Research (CANHR). She also holds a joint appointment with the Northwest Indian College in Washington State, serving as director for the American Indian Wellness through Research Engagement (AIWRE) program. As a health disparities research, Stacy brings both her Indigenous and health sciences background and training to bear in her efforts to increase strengths, wellbing and resilience in AIAN communities.

Alaska INBRE Travel Awards are designed to provide students the opportunity to present their findings, engage with mentors, and/or obtain technical training in science related to the specific aims of the Alaska INBRE Program. Travel may be to conferences, workshops, trainings, or other academic settings that allow awardees to present their research, interact with other scientists in their field of research, or learn new research methods.
