Announcing Attendance Boundaries
|

On May 9, the Board of Trustees approved attendance boundaries for the elementary, middle, and high schools on the Agnews site. This was the final step in a year’s work with the 44-member Agnews Boundary Advisory Committee. During this past year, the Committee sought feedback and shared their work with Board members, staff, parents, students, and the community.

Superintendent Search Update
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, Board President Dr. Michele Ryan has the following announcement:
"The Board has selected a Superintendent finalist pending negotiations. The Board will announce the candidate as soon as we have the details finalized, and we expect to approve the contract at our May 23, 2019, regular board meeting."

New Principals Announced
We pride ourselves on hiring the best of the best and that's just what we did with our most recent managerial hires. At the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year, we are proud to say that our very own Chandra Henry will move into the role of principal at Peterson Middle School and that we will be welcoming Jeff Keller as the new Scott Lane principal.

Safe Routes
to School
On April 10, Scott Lane Elementary School partnered with the City of Santa Clara Safe Routes to School team to teach students about helmet safety. Using a melon as a substitute head, the demonstration highlighted the dangers of not wearing a helmet. When dropped with a helmet on, the melon did not break or crack, but when dropped without the protection of the helmet, the melon exploded. Read more on the District website.

Hughes Awarded Grant
On April 12, Kathryn Hughes Elementary School was awarded an Academic Support Grant by Liberty Lodge #299 Free and Accepted Masons of the State of California. The grant was created to support school infrastructure, equipment, and/or programs in the areas of mathematics, science, language arts, social sciences, computer science, or music. Celebrating Volunteers
On April 9, Santa Clara Unified School District celebrated our exceptional student and community volunteers for their ongoing efforts to make our schools a better place to learn. In honor of Public Schools Week (March 25-29), Public Schools Month (April), and National Volunteer Week (April 15-21), the annual Public School Week Awards celebration offers our schools the opportunity to honor the members of our district community that go above and beyond. Lessons in the Dangers of Drinking and Driving and Distracted Driving

On May 2 and 3, the Santa Clara Police Department and Santa Clara Unified School District hosted a two-day drunk driving and distracted driving prevention program — Every 15 Minutes. The event took place at Santa Clara High School and grades 11 and 12 participated. The program was created to offer students a realistic understanding of the impact on people involved in alcohol-related and distracted driving fatal collisions. Fostering Inclusion with Special Olympics
March 7 marked the date of SCUSD’s inaugural Unified Sports High School Basketball game sponsored by Special Olympics of Northern California. This collaborative event was created to connect student-athletes in the special education program from across the district with student buddies through athletics. Many students from Wilcox and Santa Clara High School attended the event to support the teams — their enthusiasm was apparent in the cheers vibrating through the Wilcox gym.
