BISHOP'S VISITS IN EASTERTIDE 

This week we're praying for The Episcopal Church in Okatie on our Diocesan Prayer Calendar. Bishop Skip Adams visited at Okatie to celebrate, preach and administer the sacrament of Confirmation on May 12 (see the photo above). Find a photo album from his visit to Okatie here

This Sunday: We'll be praying for the Church of the Messiah, Myrtle Beach beginning May 19. Bishop Adams will celebrate and preach at the 10 am Holy Eucharist at Messiah, which worships each Sunday in Wingard Hall at St. Philip Lutheran Church, 6200 N. King's Highway in Myrtle Beach. A luncheon will follow, and all are welcome.

Upcoming Episcopal Visitations: May 26 at St. James-Santee, McClellanville, June 2 at Epiphany, Summerville, and June 9 at St. Anne’s, Conway.

SEWANEE GRADUATION 

Graduation blessings to Charles Jenkins of our Diocese, shown here with the Rt. Rev. J. Neil Alexander, Dean of the School of Theology at the University of the South: Sewanee, on commencement day, May 9. Charles, who completed a post-graduate degree in Anglican Studies, is a candidate for ordination to the diaconate on June 15 at 11 am at Grace Church Cathedral, along with Lauren Kay, who is graduating later this month from Seminary of the Southwest. Your prayers and presence are requested on June 15: see the invitation here.

BASEBALL OUTING JUNE 1: GET YOUR TICKETS NOW!

St. Stephen's, North Myrtle Beach is inviting churches across the diocese, and especially those in the Pee Dee-Waccamaw Deanery, to join them for an evening of baseball at the Myrtle Beach Pelicans game on Saturday, June 1. Group tickets are available now, and the organizers are hoping to get enough participants to offer some other fun ballpark extras, too. Find details and order tickets here.

GARDEN TOUR AT
ALL SAINTS' HHI
THIS SATURDAY

All Saints, Hilton Head Island is getting ready for its 32nd Annual Garden Tour this Saturday, May 18. A limited number of tickets are sold, and they can be purchased online here through Thursday; after that, any tickets left can be purchased at the church.

This tour of seven local gardens raises money for local charities that address issues of hunger, homelessness, aging, and literacy – more than half a million dollars since the event began! Tickets are $35 and include lunch. Read a newspaper article about the tour here.

  

LOBSTER SALE SATURDAY AT
ST. THOMAS

The annual Lobster Sale fundraiser at St. Thomas, North Charleston is this Saturday, May 18 from 11 am-4 pm. Pre-order live Maine lobsters to pick up, or order lobster dinners to eat at the church's Lobster Shack, or take home. Find all the details and an order form here.

May 20: Classical Christian Architecture Presentation at St. Stephen's, Charleston, 6 pm. Architect Curtis M. Estes will talk about Charleston's sacred spaces as part of the parish's Evening Lecture Series. A reception will follow. Admission is free; donations are accepted. RSVP here.

ASCENSIONTIDE: EUCHARIST, VISITING PREACHER

On May 30, the Feast of the Ascension, Bishop Skip Adams will celebrate at Choral Eucharist at 12 pm at Grace Church Cathedral, with the Reverend Martin L. Smith visiting Grace as preacher. Fr. Smith also will speak at the adult education hour at Grace on Sunday, June 2 at 10 am, speaking on the New Testament theme of the Risen Christ as the pioneer who leads us into his, and our, future. Fr. Smith will also preach at the 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. services at Grace that day.

May 25: Choraliers Music Club in Concert
St. Mark's, Charleston, 8 pm (additional performances on June 1 and June 8)
As one of the city's most seasoned choral groups, The Choraliers will present a dynamic
one-hour Gullah-Geechee performance of Gullah Folklore including both arranged and unarranged Spirituals, gospel, blues, and excerpts from Gershwin's Porgy and Bess. Admission $15 adult, $12 senior & student, children under 6 free. (Ticket information)

May 27: Lee Kohlenberg Organ Recital
Grace Church Cathedral, Charleston,  10 am
Lee Kohlenberg, who was coordinator for the Piccolo Spoleto L'Organo series for 11 years as well as the Festival of Churches and Choral Artists Series, will perform a recital featuring English composers: Herman Berlinsky’s “Burning Bush” and Marcel Dupre’s “Variations sur un Noel.” Free admission.

May 27: Atlanta Schola Cantorum in Concert
Grace Church Cathedral, Charleston, 2 pm
Headed up by new music director, Chris Walters, Atlanta Schola Cantorum performs a capella choral works and later works by contemporary composers such as Lauridsen, Part, and Whitacre at this unique event. Free admission.

'GRACE 2 GO' FOR THE NEIGHBORS 

A team at Grace Church Cathedral distributes simple bag dinners from the church lawn on May 8 as part of the new "Grace 2 Go" outreach effort. It's an extension of Grace's weekly Community Suppers – volunteers pack bags of sandwiches, chips, fruit and a cookie, and distribute them from 5:30-6:30 pm each Wednesday. Community suppers also are offered on Wednesdays evenings at Grace. The meals are free and donations are welcome.

SCAM ALERTS: BE AWARE OF EMAILS 

Several churches in our diocese have been issuing warnings to members about fake emails from scammers pretending to be members of the clergy. Please be alert for these emails, which can appear quite convincing. Often the return email address looks very similar to the clergy's actual email. You should not respond to emails of this type, and be especially wary of any request for money or gift cards.

Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby is once again inviting people around the world to join "Thy Kingdom Come," a 10-day wave of prayer from Ascension Day (May 30) to Pentecost (June 9). Join Christians around the world who will be praying daily for others to come to know Jesus Christ. Have you considered a year of service as part of the Episcopal Service Corps? Or do you know a young adult (ages 21-32) for whom ESC might be a good fit? VERGERS GUILD OFFERS RETREAT

The Vergers Guild of The Episcopal Church, a service organization that supports the ministry of vergers, sacristans, worship leaders, altar guild members and more, is offering its 2019 Annual Conference Retreat October 24-27 at Camp Allen in Navasota, Texas.
