Hi Again,

Welcome to a new edition of the State of Charge Newsletter. A concise monthly overview of the renewable energy transition and the advent of electric mobility.

This month we look at the prospective temperature changes in cities, we applaud 👏🏽 the Bavarians, we take a look at the future of air conditioners, and listen to a podcast about the final hours of the 🦖.

SoC Big Story

Nations around the globe have pledged to increase their forest cover by planting millions of trees. But new research shows much of this growth would be in monoculture plantations that would be quickly cut down and do little to tackle climate change or preserve biodiversity. Too often fast-growing trees like Eucalyptus are planted, but these do too little for safeguarding biodiversity.

SoC Must Read

This month we read about a conservative German state, where the public is driving political change. Alarmed at steep declines in insects and wildlife, Bavarian voters backed a referendum aimed at changing destructive farming practices and repairing damaged ecosystems. Now, Bavaria’s initiatives are inspiring other German states to follow suit.

What happens when you take a 2018 Nissan LEAF on a 1200 mile journey along the steepest interstate climb in the USA. To put it into the writer's own words: "This was a HARD trip. Describing it to my mom, she told me she's not sure she'll ever want an EV."

Undertaking a road trip with an EV in Europe comes with its own challenges.

Our world is getting warmer. This we know. But how much warmer? Last year we saw heat records broken on a global scale. But how much will temperatures change in specific locations, and what does it mean for the places we live in? This article breaks down temperature changes in major US cities with some awesome interactive infographics.

With rising temperatures and more people dying because of extreme heatwaves, air conditioners are becoming ever more important and mainstream. They are, however, not the cleanest of machines and actively contribute to global warming. But what if air conditioners could help save the planet? First, take a look at this article that describes a technique where air conditioners can capture CO2. Secondly, a Dutch company that can turn heat into cold without requiring energy itself, by using thermoacoustic technology. Sounds like sci-fi? They have already been shipping commercial product since last September!

Another scary report on the thawing of the permafrost in the Arctic appeared last month in Nature. And this is not a slow process; it is happening so fast that scientists are losing their equipment.

SoC Deep Dive

A new study suggests that a global transition to 100% renewable energy across all sectors – power, heat, transport, and desalination before 2050 is feasible. The sustainable energy system is more efficient and cost-effective than the existing system, which is based primarily on fossil fuels and nuclear. A global renewable transition is the only sustainable option for the energy sector and is compatible with the internationally adopted Paris Agreement. The energy transition is not a question of technical feasibility or economic viability, but one of political will. You can download the full article after the jump.
