ENDEAVORING IN EXCELLENCE
This month's amazing story was inspired by a match from M.A.Y. Mentoring in Shendandoah. Jennifer Burkhiser has been mentoring with M.A.Y. Mentoring for nearly 16 years, and during that time has formed strong, familial bonds with her mentees. Jennifer is also one of the award recipients for the 2019 Excellence in Mentoring Awards this year! Click on the image below to hear more about Jennifer and her mentees, Rafael (left) and Jacquelyn (right).

SOCIAL MEDIA TIP
With the end of the school year, this is a wonderful time to share photos of mentees who have graduated from high school, or have moved up from middle school to high school, or from elementary school to middle school. Post pictures of any end of the school year events that your mentoring program hosts for mentees,  mentors, and their families. Share these stories and these proud moments on your social media platforms. Get out the word that mentoring has a positive impact on academic achievement and use the hashtag #MentorIRL

MENTORING MATERIALS: Resources for Your Program

RESEARCH

Creating Tiered Levels of Support to Sustainably Reduce Coordinator Burn-Out. The Mentor Coordinator position can sometimes be a catch-all for every aspect of a mentoring program. The coordinator is the recruiter, trainer, supporter, evaluator, and many times the fundraiser of the organization. With this current structure, burnout is inevitable.

A Meta-Analysis on the Career Advantages for Mentors. Gosh and Reio have consolidated the potential advantages of mentoring for mentors through their meta-analysis. They examined areas including psychosocial & role-modeling mentor support and career correlate with job performance, job satisfaction, career success, turnover intent, and organizational commitment.

RESOURCES

The Mentoring Toolkit 2.0: Resources for Developing Program for Incarcerated Youth. This resource provides information, resources, and program descriptions geared towards personnel at juvenile correctional facilities and other organizations to design effective mentoring programs for youth experiencing neglect and involved in delinquent behavior, particularly those who are incarcerated. This resource explores the characteristics of youth involved in the juvenile justice system and the challenges and benefits of establishing mentoring programs for this population of youth.

Opportunities for High School Mentors or Mentees
The Iowa Department of Human Rights is now accepting applications for two youth initiatives--the State of Iowa Youth Advisory Council (SIYAC) and the Iowa Youth Congress (IYC). These are opportunities for youth to develop leadership skills, connect with community leaders, and improve their community through civic engagement and volunteerism.
