Free, Healthy Meals Available During Summer Break

Children and teens at risk of inadequate food when school is not in session may receive free, nutritious meals and snacks through the Summer Food Service Program from May 1 through Aug. 17. The meals are similar to school lunch and breakfast program offerings.

Measles Precautions Urged by NC Health Officials

With multiple measles outbreaks occurring in the United States, DHHS is encouraging preventive measures and reminding everyone that vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones against measles.

Mental Health Resources Shared After UNC-C Shooting

Tragic events like the shooting at UNC-Charlotte can take a toll on mental health. DHHS Secretary Mandy Cohen shared mental health resources in the aftermath of the event for those who are suffering from distress or anxiety. "We know that events like this are stressful and there is no right or wrong way to feel," she said.

Opioid Treatment Pilot to Be Created for Inmates Transitioning from Prison

DHHS and the NC Department of Public Safety are partnering to create a new medication-assisted treatment (MAT) program to reduce the overdose-related deaths of people with an opioid  disorder who are re-entering their communities upon leaving prison.

Older Americans Month took center stage at Raleigh’s Dorothea Dix Campus on May 3 as the Division of Aging and Adult Services sponsored DHHS’ monthly First Friday event.

It's Emergency Preparedness Week

As North Carolina works to rebuild from past storms, Governor Roy Cooper urged North Carolinians to take steps now to get ready for the next hurricane season. Hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30 and to encourage residents to prepare, Governor Cooper has proclaimed May 5-11 as Hurricane Preparedness Week.

DHHS Holds Mental Health Roundtable

One in 20 people in NC lives with a serious mental illness, and more than half the adults with mental illness don't receive needed treatment. A recent roundtable discussion included DHHS leadership, mental health providers, consumers and advocacy leaders, and the group discussed the impact of untreated behavioral health on communities and the challenges of accessing care.

Fans Available for Eligible Disabled and Older Adults

As warmer weather arrives, DHHS' Division of Aging and Adult Services is partnering with the N.C. Area Agencies on Aging and local service providers to distribute fans to eligible recipients through Operation Fan Heat Relief from May 1 – Oct. 31.

Governor Cooper, DHHS Encourage Hepatitis Vaccination, Testing

Chronic viral hepatitis affects over 230,000 North Carolinians. Because many more may have it but do not realize they are infected until they have symptoms, Governor Roy Cooper proclaimed May as Hepatitis Awareness Month and May 19 as Hepatitis Testing Day.

Minority Health Month Wraps Up

April was Minority Health Month in North Carolina. This year’s theme was “Active & Healthy,” and health advocates promoted the benefits of adding even small amounts of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity into daily routines. DHHS' Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities hosted several activities and events throughout the month.
