Red Bull Music Academy: Bass Camp and Creative Progression
We spoke with a couple of old pals, Sandro Petrillo, also known as Sergio SP, and Kimberley Jev (Kimleestar) for some insight into the Red Bull Music Academy Bass Camp, a monumental occasion for electronic music in Calgary which also happened to be one of the last RBMA events to ever occur. Read the full rundown, recap, and intimate recollections over in our blog post here. |

Habitat Living Sound May 10 Old BassBus pals Esette, Miss Hazard, Tiny Toque and Demille host an evening of organic and ecstatic house music at Calgary’s favourite house music hole-in-the-wall Habitat Living Sound. Generally a constant cycle through each DJs tunes two or three at a time, rather than proper hour and change sets, Haus feels like vibe and connectiveness embodied. |

NMC & Sled Island present: Ian William Craig |
Studio Bell May 10 Studio Bell and the National Music Centre will extend their curation to experimental new bounds May 10 when Ian William Craig arrives. The multi-disciplinary artist creates in many capacities, from words to graphics, but his sonic compositions are an idiosyncratic blend of his own classically-conditioned voice, run through effects and distortion, blended with broken tape machines and other instruments, into sound collages of breathtaking scope and emotion. This show will be esoteric, thought-provoking, and highly unusual, so approach with care and enjoy the ride. |

Cinematic Sundays: McQueen |
Glenbow Museum May 26 Alexander McQueen was a phenom, celebrated and renowned in his 20s by a notoriously competitive and at times vicious fashion industry. His exhibits consistently bucked trends and created surprise, intrigue and advancement in the sometimes stale world of high fashion, and the plucky Northern Englishman took his world by storm for his unfortunately short life. This exceptional documentary is part of the Glenbow Museum’s Cinematic Sundays series of afternoon screenings of modern film, though it doesn’t include admission to the Museum itself, be warned. |

Gershwin’s Magic Key presented by The Calgary International Children’s Festival and Classical Kids Live!
On May 26th, take the little ones to 1920s New York, where Classical Kids Live! Will introduce them to the life and works on George Gershwin. Gershwin was one of the 20th century’s most foundational songwriters, and is responsible for the genre-defying and culture-defining piece Rhapsody in Blue , which has been credited with bringing blues and jazz music into the mainstream from its roots in small, predominantly black communities.
This event is an innovative educationally entertaining evening, with a combination of theatrical performance and live music. The actors and music are intertwined into an engaging narrative which will keep kids interested while helping them learn new things about the past, the music that shaped their culture, and the social backdrop that is woven into the tapestry of the art they see on stage.
