Margot Kushel, MD, Professor of Medicine has been selected to lead an academic research program on homelessness with a $30 million donation and the establishment of the UCSF Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative. Congratulations Margot! We're sure that research opportunities and collaborations will come from this and we will keep everyone posted on such opportunities as the program takes shape.

Please join us in welcoming Jimmie Ye, PhD, to the Department of Medicine. Jimmie’s lab in the UCSF Institute for Human Genetics (IHG) develops and uses novel experimental and computational tools to study the immune system and autoimmunity. His group is making exciting contributions to the emerging field of single cell genomics. Jimmie is joining the Rheumatology Division while remaining a valued member of the IHG, the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, the Bakar Computational Health Sciences Institute (BCHSI), the Bakar ImmunoX initiative, and the Biomedical Sciences graduate program. Louis Walter, MD, Professor and Chief of the UCSF Division of Geriatrics, will share her experience as an effective mentor. K Grant Writing Workshop
The Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) Training Program offers a workshop for clinical research scholars (fellows or early junior faculty), who are planning to apply for a K-series grant in patient-oriented research. This is a structured set of faculty-facilitated works-in-progress sessions, focused on writing a mentored K-grant, for submission during the upcoming K-cycle. Applications to participate in the workshop targeting the NIH October deadline are due June 3, 2019.

Pre-independent Bench Scientists Book Club
Congratulations to the Pre-independent Bench Scientists group, which has been awarded funds to host a Book Giveaway/Book Club to discuss Not Discussed: The Unspoken Rules for a Career in Academic Medical Research, by Dr. C. Michael Stein. This group was launched last year for and by junior faculty members and clinical fellows conducting bench science who wanted to build a community around career development and networking for Bench Scientists in the Department. The first meeting of this group will be held on Thursday, June 13 from 5:00-6:00PM in Moffitt, Room M-989 and Zoom will be available. UCSF UC Berkeley - UCSF Faculty Collaboration Program
Application deadline is May 31st.
The program strives to reward innovative research approaches that take advantage of and promote the convergence of the biomedical, physical and engineering fields. The program currently provides support for one scientist to collaborate with colleagues at the other institution each year.

Doris Duke Charitable Foundation Physician Scientist Fellowship
Application deadline is June 7th.
Grants of up to $110,000 each year for one or two years will be awarded to physician scientists in subspecialty training to support clinical research that will strengthen their careers as biomedical investigators. This is a new program that is targeted at clinical researchers and unlike other fellowships can be held together with a training grant, such as an NIH T or F award.

UCSF Nutrition Obesity Research Center Pilot & Feasibility Grant
Application deadline is June 8th.
The Nutrition Obesity Research Center (NORC) at UCSF is sponsoring Pilot and Feasibility Grants, which provide funding for investigators to pursue novel and promising ideas broadly relevant to nutrition, obesity, and metabolism research. The grant is designed to facilitate the engagement of junior faculty and encourage new directions in NORC related research, regardless of a laboratory’s historical research focus. Funding of up to $50,000 per application is available for a period of 12 months.

Damon Runyon-Rachleff Innovation Award
Application deadline is July 1st.
The award provides support for the next generation of exceptionally creative thinkers with "high-risk/high-reward" ideas that have the potential to significantly impact our understanding of and/or approaches to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. The award will be for two years, $200,000 per yearwith the opportunity for up to two additional years of funding.

Beckman Young Investigator Program Grant
Application deadline is August 9th.
The grant provides research support to the most promising young faculty members within the first three years of a tenure-track position, particularly to foster the invention of methods, instruments and materials that will open up new avenues of research in science. Proposals should be truly innovative, high-risk, and show promise for contributing to significant advances in chemistry and the life sciences. Funding is for up to 4 years and approximately $600,000.
