Geographicus Rare and Antique Maps New Acquisitions

Our online antique map gallery is updated daily. For your enjoyment and consideration, please find below a list of our most recent acquisitions.

We are glad to be back from a successful and fun Chicago Map Fair.  Stay tuned for interesting new discoveries from the fair in the coming weeks.   This week, we bring you two exceptionally exciting items: a never-before-seen 1868 map illustrated the Tet Offensive published by the Vietnamese mission in Havana, Cuba!  and!! the only known example of an important map of Hankou showing reconstruction plans after the burning of Hankou during the Defense of Yangxi (1911). In addition, we offer an interesting collection off Holy Land and Israel material - including some published in Vietnamese!

Our next major fair is the London Map Fair!  We will only ring about 50 important maps to the fair in June, so if you are interested in something specific, please let us know at least 2 weeks in advance so that we have time for shipping.

We are also in the process of a major Geographicus technological upgrade, so stay tuned for new features scheduled to be released over the next month.

Only known example. The 1911 burning of Hankow and reconstruction plans.

This is a rare 1912 Chinese-English bilingual map of Hankow (Hankou), part of modern Wuhan, China. The map was issued by the English-language Hankou based newspaper, Hankow Daily News , shortly following the 1911 burning of Hankou by Qing loyalist forces during the Xinhai Revolution (October 18 - December 1, 1911). 1968 Viet Cong Map of Vietnam War Progress Published in Cuba

Illustrates the 'liberated zones' of South Vietnam and was published by the Viet Cong in Cuba.

A map of the utmost rarity and sheer revolutionary coolness. This is a 1968 map of Vietnam published in Havana, Cuba, by the Misión Permanente del Frente Nacional de Liberación de Viet Nam del Sur en la Républica de Cuba (Permanent Mission of the National Liberation Front of South Viet Nam in the Republic of Cuba), essentially the Việt Cộng mission to Cuba. A charming and incredibly rare pictorial map of Yale University that even highlights the school's secret societies.

This is a 1950 Herbert Brook pictorial map of Yale University. The map depicts Yale's campus from Sheffield Square and the Grove Street Cemetery and from Park Street to Temple Street. Specific colleges are identified all over campus, including Pierson College, Davenport College, Branford College, Saybrook College, Trumbull College, Berkeley College, Silliman College, Timothy Dwight College, and Calhoun College. What Kind of an American Are You?

Promoting an ostenisbly patriotic song challenging immigrants to do their part and support the U.S. during World War I effort.

This is a 1917 propaganda map of the United States illustrating a cover of sheet music and promoting 'Americanness.' The cover features a map of the entire United States overshadowed by a large portrait of Uncle Sam pointing his index finger at the viewer. The song, written by Lew Brown and Charles McCarron and composed by Albert von Tilzer, is a rousing tune urging Americans to do their part in supporting the effort in World War I. PRICE: 675.00 USD

1849 Symonds Linen Map of Jerusalem (first scientific survey of Jerusalem)

Plan of the town and environs of Jerusalem: Copied by Permission of Field Marshal the Marquis of Anglesey, K.G. G.C.H. Master General of the Ordnance, from the original drawing of the survey made in the month of March 1841.

The first scientific map of Jerusalem made during the Oriental Incident of 1840.

This seminal 1849 map, printed on linen, is the first scientific survey of Jerusalem. Based upon survey work completed by John Frederick Anthony Symonds and Edward Aldrich, the map is centered on the walled city of Jerusalem, which is covered in considerable detail. It extends beyond the wall, illustrating topography, as far east at the Mount of Olives, west to Birket Mamillah, north as far as Kubur el Muluk (Tomb of the Kings), and south to the 'Hill of Evil Council. A Hebrew map of Israel published shortly after the Six-Day War.

This is a c. 1968 Michael Avi-Yonah map of Israel in Hebrew. The map depicts the region from the Mediterranean Sea to Jordan and Syria and from Lebanon to Gaza. Although undated, the presence of two different borders, and the language used in the key, allows us to deduce that this map must postdate the 1967 Six-Day War when Israel occupied the West Bank and Gaza Strip. 1967 Vietnamese Dan Chu Newspaper Map of the Six-Day War in the Middle East

Highlights the fighting in the West Bank, Golan Heights, and on the Sinai Peninsula.

This is a c. 1967 Thai Hung and Dan Chu newspaper map of the Middle East during the Six-Day War. A composition consisting of four maps on one sheet, a general map of the Middle East is situated on the left, providing the newspaper's readers with the geographical context they need to be able to comprehend the events unfolding in the war. This map illustrates the region from the Mediterranean Sea and Egypt to Iraq and Saudi Arabia and from Lebanon and Syria to the Red Sea. PRICE: 650.00 USD

This is a 1949 H. Goldschmidt city map or plan of Tel Aviv, Israel in Hebrew. The map depicts the city from the Yarkon River south to Jaffa and from the Mediterranean Sea to Ramat Gan. Highly detailed, myriad streets are illustrated and labeled throughout the city, as are numerous buildings and parks. The Ayalon River is also illustrated. An inset map of the region is situated in the lower left corner, while an index of locations in the city is along the left border. PRICE: 500.00 USD

This is a 1935 Berhard Gauer pictorial map of Jerusalem. The map depicts the city from the Greek Monastery of the Cross to the Chapel of Ascension and the Russian Tower and from the Grand Mufti's House to the German-American Cemetery. The walled Old City serves as the map's focal point with numerous sites illustrated in profile, including the Dome of the Rock, the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and the Wailing Wall on and around the Temple Mount. This is a 1954 Byrel 'Lefty' Burgess humorous pictorial map of Frankfurt, Germany, published by Stars and Stripes in Darmstadt, Germany. The map depicts the city from the Höchst district of Frankfurt to the town of Bad Vilbel and from the Harheim district of Frankfurt to Offenbach. Myriad locations throughout Frankfurt are illustrated, with special attention paid to those associated with the American military presence in the city. PRICE: 750.00 USD

This is an 1846 Ramon Alabern y Casas and E. Mabon map of the Balearic Islands. The map centers on Mallorca, with Menorca to the right. Ibiza, the third island in the trio, is depicted in an inset map in the lower left corner. All three islands are illustrated in detail, with myriad locations throughout all three labeled, including cities, towns, and points along the coasts of each island. PRICE: 450.00 USD

1891 American Bank Note Company Railroad Map of Long Island

Long Island and Eastern States Line.

An extremely rare railroad map of the route between Brooklyn and Boston.

This is an 1891 American Bank Note Company railroad map of Long Island. The map illustrates railroad connections between Brooklyn, Long Island City, and Boston, along with all the points in between and depicts the region from New Jersey to Boston and from Albany to Staten Island. The railroads are highlighted in red and trace the way from Brooklyn to Boston. The steamer 'Cape Charles' is used for the transfer across Long Island Sound. Trains left Boston and Brooklyn at approximately 11 p.m. PRICE: 450.00 USD

An early map of Florida just before the Second Seminole War.

This is a scarce 1835 T. G. Bradford map of Florida. The map depicts Florida as it appeared at the outset of the Second Seminole War (1835 - 1842) from Georgia to the Florida Keys and from St. Joseph's Bay to the Atlantic Ocean, with an inset map situated along the left border illustrating western Florida from Perdido Bay to St. Andrews Bay. An early Florida county structure is presented with Mosquito County occupying most of eastern Florida. PRICE: 350.00 USD

An early comparative mountains chart originally commissioned by Alexander von Humboldt.

This is Adam and Charles Black's rare 1844 profile view of the Andes Mountains, particularly Ecuador's Mt. Chimborazo, based upon an influential 1805 illustration by the renowned German explorer and scientist Alexander von Humboldt. Among the first scientists to take Kant’s philosophy of Transcendental Idealism into the scientific field, Alexander von Humboldt illustrates discoveries made on his ascent (the first) of Mt. This is a 1921 Holt, Renfrew, and Company map of the Saint Lawrence River. Divided into two parts, the first map depicts the St. Lawrence River from Hamilton, Ontario to Montreal and from the Lake of the Two Mountains, to Buffalo, New York, while the second depicts the river from Montreal to the Saguenay River and Tadousac and from Ste Anne to Lake Champlain. This is a 1780 Robert Pool and John Cash city map or plan of Dublin, Ireland. The map depicts the city from the Royal Hospital to the Marine School and from Eccles Street to a bridge of 'part of the new canal'. Highly detailed, myriad streets are labeled throughout Dublin, some of which are rather small alleys. The buildings, which include the Great Pyramid at Giza, the dome of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, St. Paul's in London, St. Michael's Tower in Hamburg, and the Luxor Obelisk in Paris, are all numerically identified. This is a 1757 Jacques-Nicolas Bellin map of Mexico City as it appeared shortly after the Spanish conquest of the Aztec capital Tenochtitlán. Situated on an islet in Lake Texcoco, Tenochtitlán grew through the creation of artificial islands connected by causeways, which also connected the city with the mainland. PRICE: 200.00 USD

This is a 1757 Jacques-Nicolas Bellin map of Celebes (Sulawesi), Indonesia. The map depicts the entire island and labels villages, rivers, and mountain ranges. The island is divided into several kingdoms (royaumes), each of which is labeled. Gulfs along the coastline are also labeled, as are smaller islands. One safe harbor is also noted next to the Dutch fort (Fort Hollandois) in the southwest part of the island. PRICE: 175.00 USD

This is a 1752 Jacques-Nicolas Bellin map of the Marianas Islands, a crescent-spaped archipelago in the western North Pacific Ocean. The map depicts the archipelago from Farallon de Pajaros (Urac) to Guam and illustrates fourteen islands including the Maug Islands, Asuncion Island (Assonsong), Pagan (Pagon), Saipan, Tinian, and Guam. A fairly detailed inset map of Guam is situated in the lower left corner and labels villages and a handful of coastal sites. PRICE: 150.00 USD

1757 Bellin Map of French Guiana and Suriname

References native tribes while at the same time making it clear how little was known about the interior of the region.

This is a 1757 Jacques-Nicolas Bellin map of northeastern South America. The map depicts the region from the Essequibo River in Guyana through Suriname and French Guiana to the Araguari River in Brazil. Myriad locations are labeled along the Atlantic coast, including Paramaribo, Suriname. The vast majority of these locations are rivers, while others are towns along the coast. Some native villages are also identified, but the nations of the native peoples are at least referenced. PRICE: 175.00 USD

Geographicus Rare & Antique Maps is located in Brooklyn, New York, and was founded by Kevin Brown in 1999. We are generalist antiquarians dealing in historic maps from all over the world and in all price ranges. Our enthusiasm, passion and devotion to scholarship is expressed in our meticulously researched studies of each map offering.  
Geographicus welcomes clients by appointment at our Brooklyn location.  Our hours are Noon to 6PM Monday through Friday, but other appointments, including evenings and weekends, are typically available on request.

We are located in the ground floor of a limestone townhouse in the historic Stuyvesant Heights district of Brooklyn.  The closest subway stop is Gates Avenue on the J train.  Commuting time is about 20 minutes from the Financial District.
