West End SPEAKS to West End ACTS

National Flag Company Celebrates 150 years!

The National Flag Company has been creating unique flags in the West End since 1869.  The company started as the Spencer & Craig Printing Works specializing in steam printing, bookbinding, and lithography.  By 1894, the company incorporated the National Flag company and began creating flags, banners, and decorations.  The company has since made all the flags for the MLB All-Star Game in 2015 and the Cincinnati Reds 150 anniversary flags.

Congrats on 150 years National Flag Company! We are happy to have you in the neighborhood!

Seven Hills Neighborhood Houses is conducting this survey to better understand the priorities of people who live, work and own a business in the West End and the perceptions of how the community has changed over time.
Please click here to take the survey!

On May 11th, Red Bike and Green Cincinnati hosted 100 Blacks on Bikes, where over 100 black community members joined to ride bikes around the West End and surrounding communities.  The ride lasted from 1-2p, but there was an additional expo in Wade Street park from 12p-4p.  It was a fantastic event that brought the community together to celebrate.

On May 17th, Turner Construction arranged for a group of volunteers to come out to the West End to rehab Sands Playground.  The group planted new flowers in the garden beds and added a fresh coat of paint to the park.

Make sure to stop by and check it out!

With the help of Kathy Kugler, the Sierra Club, Keep Cincinnati Beautiful and the West End Community Council, Seven Hills Neighborhood Houses was able to get a few raised garden beds started behind their building on June 3rd.  A few West End teens volunteered to help plant a variety of vegetables including tomatoes, sweet peppers, okra, radishes, eggplant, and carrots. Beds are available, so please call Sidney Nation at 513-407-5362 if you are interested.

Hub Gardens is a new pilot program among the Civic Garden Center’s network of 65 Community Gardens. A Hub Garden is a Community Garden that has already exhibited effective leadership in its targeted community and that the Civic Garden Center will further support with additional programming. Just like the hub in a wheel, the Hub Garden will engage with the surrounding community and other Community Gardens that are in close proximity. This will leverage the resources of the Civic Garden Center to better benefit all of the Community Gardens in its network.

Cincy Stories is building community through stories. Their plan to feature the West End in a Street Stories series, will require much support both from the community and philanthropic sources. Cincy Stories hopes to build a community of listening, understanding and empathy. Whether through their monthly live storytelling events, short documentary videos, or community engagement work, they know that stories do sacred things and simply want to take part in the hearing and telling of our collective stories.

Youth programs in the West End are doing some amazing work! Here's a teaser of Cincy Stories time spent with Queen City Boxing Club, another organization changing lives in our community.
