May 2019 Quarterly Update
The mission of the Fort Atkinson Community Foundation is to receive donations for educational, cultural, charitable, or benevolent purposes and use them to  benefit our residents and enhance the quality of life in the Fort Atkinson area.

Recently Awarded Grants

April 2019 Community Foundation Board Meeting:

$4,250 to Luther Elementary School
to help create a sensory garden in the school's courtyard.  Luther School staff plan to transform a neglected courtyard (see below) into a calm outdoor space that will serve as both an outdoor classroom, featuring a poem by local poet Lorine Niedecker, and a garden to grow herbs and vegetables for use in their school lunches.  They hope to get this creative project underway this spring.
$15,482 grant to the Fort Atkinson Fire Department
to help purchase a cardiac monitor for the new ambulance service.  Last year, we helped the Fort Atkinson Fire Department purchase an ambulance so they could start their own ambulance service as the call-in volume was exceeding the capacity of the city's EMS provider.  Its been busy since last summer and a critical need has been identified - a cardiac monitor that can transmit live information to the hospital emergency room.   We are happy to pitch in and help with this one.  Who knows whose life it will save!
$50,000 to the City of Fort Atkinson
to help improve pedestrian access and safety at five intersections in the City of Fort Atkinson.  The City, with the help of a grant from Easter Seals to improve transit for under-served citizens, has identified five locations in need of better and safer pedestrian crossings.  The five locations are Janesville Avenue at Jones Park, pictured above; the intersection of West Sherman Avenue and Robert Street; the intersection of Roosevelt Street and Madison Avenue; Whitewater Avenue at Purdy School; and the intersection of Whitewater Avenue and East Rockwell Avenue.  The intent at each crossing is to stop traffic with pedestrian-activated lights and signage (see insert), slow traffic with concrete bump outs or islands where possible, and improve crosswalk paint markings to enhance visibility.

$3,700 to Evergreen Cemetery Association
to paint the caretaker's cottage and reconstruct two sidewalks that formerly provided access to the historic building (see below).  The cottage, built c.1887 and designated a Local Landmark by the Historic Preservation Commission in 1998, was a favorite of Mark and Valerie Kerschensteiner.  When Mark opened a Donor-Advised Fund with us in 1990, one of the early grants he recommended was a project to help restore this unique cottage.  Though Mark and Valerie are no longer with us, the fund they established is continuing to support the things they cared about, thanks to their daughter and grandson who continue to act as fund advisors.  We are grateful to all of them for their good stewardship of the caretaker's cottage.
$750 to the School District of Fort Atkinson
to provide funds for the 2019 Ed Winiarski Turn-Around Award

Ed Winiarski started working at Fort Atkinson High School in 1958 and his career included positions as physical education teacher, coach, athletic director and many years as assistant principal until his retirement in 1994.  His colleagues often noted the many students whose life Ed helped to 'turn-around.'  So, upon his much-too-early death in 1998, his friends and family established the Ed Winiarski Turn-Around Award and annually raised $250 to award to a student who had made positive changes in their life.  When the award's future was in doubt in 2003, the Community Foundation stepped in to provide the funding and keep the meaningful award alive.  We look forward to watching the 2019 presentation at the high school's May 22nd Senior Awards Program.

Updates on Foundation-Supported Projects

K9 War Memorial at McCoy Park

The unique K9 War Memorial, pictured above, now proudly stands guard in McCoy Park near the Veterans Memorial.  The Kennel Club of Fort Atkinson spearheaded the project, working with artist Mark Dziewior, the Block Memorial Company, and key City of Fort Atkinson staff members.  Of course, the project field marshall was Mabel Schumacher who made it all happen with her passion and her ability to separate people from their wallets, include a $12,600 grant from the Community Foundation.  Congratulations to all involved!

Memorial Park Stadium Seating

Thanks to the Fort Atkinson Parks and Recreation Department and the Fort Youth Baseball organization, fans attending little league games at Memorial Park are now able to watch in safety and comfort from the new stadium-style seats located behind the home plate backstop.  The Community Foundation was happy to partner with the City and Fort Youth Baseball to provide a grant to help make it happen.  Just looking at that inviting photo makes us want to hear, "Play Ball."

Tree Planting

Back in 2016, the Foundation awarded a matching grant of $50,000 to the revitalized Beautification Council for a five-year program to replace all the city trees lost to the emerald ash borer.  At the same time, we opened a designated  fund, the Fort Tree Fund, so the Council could raise the matching money needed.  Thanks to the Council's fundraising efforts, the City has been making steady progress in replacing our urban canopy.

On April 25th, the crew pictured above planted 18 trees, working with Chris Weismann and Jake Kelty of the City of Fort Atkinson's Public Works Department.  Our thanks to the Beautification Council, Wisconservation Club, the students from Fort Atkinson FFA, Crossroads students, and Unity Group students for doing the work.  And a special thank you to everyone who has donated to the fund, earning a matching gift from us.

Donate to the Fort Tree Fund and we'll match it!
Rockwell Teacher Projects

Five Rockwell Elementary School teachers were able to enhance their students' classroom experience thanks to a grant of up to $5,000 from the Community Foundation.   From the flexible seating options and quick-change art frames pictured here, to a unique dry-erase table and sensory materials, these targeted improvements added great value to the school's learning environment.  Grant applicant and Kindergarten teacher Amy Schuldt was pleased to report every piece was 100% wonderful.

Amy's grant application for small classroom projects that could have a big impact on learning environments got us thinking about how we might be more helpful in this regard.  See below for the announcement of our new Classroom Teacher Wish Fund.

Badger Books

Thanks to a $10,000 grant from the Community Foundation and a gift from the Fort Atkinson Lions Club, Fort Atkinson City Clerk Michelle Ebbert was able to purchase a full set of electronic poll books, known as Badger Books, and get her election staff trained on them in time for the April 2019 election.  She was thrilled with how the electronic poll books streamlined the voting process as were most voters.  The feedback has been positive all around.

Van for 18-21 Year-Old Program

The Foundation was happy to partner with the School District of Fort Atkinson to help purchase a van for use by the district's 18-21 year-old Community-Based Learning Program.  The program provides education and transitional services for students with disabilities in order to improve post-school outcomes.  The services are provided primarily in community settings, hence the need for transportation. The district qualified for a state grant that covered about 60% of the cost and we were able to provide the rest.

Classroom Teacher Grants

We are happy to announce the creation of a new fund and granting program at the Foundation that will benefit School District of Fort Atkinson classroom teachers and their students.  Starting this fall, the Classroom Teacher Wish Fund, a designated fund seeded with $100,000, will annually award approximately 4% of the fund in small grants to classroom teachers to help improve their classroom environments.  The intent is to provide assistance beyond what tax dollars can support.

Classroom teachers or school librarians at public schools in the School District of Fort Atkinson are eligible to apply for the funds.  Applications are limited to requests for specific materials, supplies, equipment or program to assist a teacher with a new or an existing project in their classrooms.  The maximum grant award will be $500.

The first annual application window will be this year from August 1st to September 15th.  Applications can be requested after August 1st from the Foundation's administrator, Sue Hartwick, via email at facf@fortfoundation.org.  Awards will be announced sometime in early November.

Scholarship News

Record Amount Being Awarded in 2019
This year, a total of 153 students submitted an application for any number of our 38 competitive scholarship programs.  We can't yet report the total number of scholarship recipients for the 2019-20 school year, as a few committees still need to meet, but we can report we will be awarding a record $376,200 in scholarships to Fort Atkinson students.  $376,2000.  In just one year!
We owe this remarkable scholarship program to all the kind and generous donors who have opened scholarship funds with us over the years.  These donors knew the importance of  education and they wanted to make sure our young people - our greatest asset - could take advantage of all the educational opportunities they earned.  We look forward to presenting many of these scholarships at Fort Atkinson High School's Senior Awards Program on May 22nd.
New Grants for Gals Scholarship Program

The Foundation is excited to be working with the Fort Atkinson chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) to offer a unique scholarship opportunity.  Starting this year, the new AAUW Grants for Gals Scholarship Fund at the Foundation will make awards to local girls and women to help them take advantage of a variety of educational, cultural, leadership or professional advancement opportunities.  Separate from our traditional college scholarship program, Grants for Gals will have its own application process by which smaller awards are made to girls and women for less traditional educational and leadership opportunities such as attending summer camp, a STEM seminar, or a leadership conference.

The first application
window will be from August 1st to September 15th, with the next one from February 1st to March 15th.   AAUW is currently developing the application process so stay tuned and we'll have an update for you in the August 2019 newsletter.

Fund Focus

New Acorn Fund

We are happy to announce a new Acorn Fund at the Foundation - the Fort Atkinson Club Community Fund.  This Acorn Fund opened with a $1,500 gift and now has five years to grow - through additional gifts and investment earnings - to reach $15,000, at which time it will mature into a designated fund that will benefit the Fort Atkinson Club in downtown Fort Atkinson.  While it's growing, we won't be charging it any administrative fees as we want to facilitate its growth.  .
