Welcome to the Nursing 1+2+1 Newsletter - an enewsletter from the UW-Stevens Point Nursing Program.

Happy Spring!

We hope everyone is staying warm on these cool spring days! It will be summer soon! Heidi, Sharon and I would like to give you a few updates on our hybrid RN to BSN completion program here at UW-Stevens Point.

Graduation May 2019

We have 12 BSN students graduating this month! This is the largest cohort that we have graduated and we are excited to see our students finish their journey.

Accreditation

CCNEOur program is entering an accreditation cycle. We are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Accreditation indicates that we have met national standard reflective of high quality BSN education. If you're planning to go to graduate school or are competing for employment, graduating from an accredited program is a needed recognition. We are in the preparatory phase of accreditation; our next on-site visit will be spring 2020. As a student in our program next spring you may be able to meet the site visitors!

Inter-professional Education Experience

MCWWe had another inter-professional education event on March 5 with 28 RN to BSN students attending the collaborative event at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). The topic was "Transitions in Care." Our students, associate-degree seeking students and medical students collaborated on various case studies related to this topic. The student evaluation was overwhelmingly positive; therefore, our next event with MCW will be in September and the focus will be on a "Just Culture."

1+2+1 Mentorship Event

MentoringWe had our first mentorship event on March 27 where our 1+2+1 students were linked with our RN to BSN students for discussion and hor d’oeuvres. There was good discussion about the RN profession and how to be successful throughout your education. We plan on continuing this event in the future. View Photos

NURS 455 Capstone Course Update: GLOBAL!!

Nursing Capstone (NURS 455 - Concepts in Nursing Practice) is a course at the end of the BSN completion program where the student is linked with a preceptor and completes a semester long scholarly project related to nursing in an area of interest.

NicaraguaUpdate: We are working on a project where we could have the students participate in a two-week concentrated global experience as an alternative to the project for N455. The health promotion and wellness students historically have traveled to the island of Ometepe, Nicaragua, where they experience service learning in the four medical clinics in the small villages on the island. We are submitting a proposal to have our RN to BSN students in N455 join them summer 2020. If this is successful, we may have an annual global experience for our RN to BSN students! We will update you when we hear if we are approved.

I have been busy chasing my three boys around in basketball, track, band, safety patrol and karate. I may complain every now and then about it, but deep down I’m loving every minute of it! I am looking forward to a week- long fishing trip to Canada this summer!

I am looking forward to summer after our three days of spring this year. We are pushing for a study abroad experience in Nicaragua for Summer 2020 for the final nursing core course, NURS 455. I will be teaching our intro nursing class (NURS 310) in Wausau starting in May. If you are interested, we pushed the dates to accommodate HESI testing. Hope you are doing well!

I am, also, teaching in the Health Care Administration course. I teach the first course in the program, an introduction of the health care system.
