Do you have fellowship?

Koinonia is a Greek word used in the New Testament describing Christian fellowship; first here in Acts 2:42“They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship (koinonia), to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”  Koinonia means more than having a coffee together after church; sharing (as in house groups) or partnership (as in church activities, like children and youth ministries) is closer to koinonia.

Two items of “news” came to my thoughts last Sunday: The first, the Bishop of Truro produced an Interim Report for Jeremy Hunt (Foreign Minister) on Persecution of Christians.  We usually think of persecution as being physical; false imprisonment, torture and ultimately death for one’s faith in Jesus; and this is a reality for many Christian brothers and sisters around the world.

The second was the reading and sermon by Gerald from James 1v2 “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”  “Trials of many kinds” may be acute or chronic, physical or emotional They result in stress, anxiety, depression, doubt – no one is immune. James says, "Look at these trials as an opportunity to trust Jesus in a deeper way and so mature in one’s faith."

The early Christians had both persecution and trials; they also had koinonia.  As the Body of Christ on earth let us practice Christian sharing and partnership (koinonia) by:
•    praying for, and supporting, fellow Christians in other parts of the world who are being persecuted;
•    sharing our lives and praying for those known to us who are facing “trials of many kinds”.
