A Rotary Moment

2019 District Conference – May 3 & 4, at the NCSU McKimmon Center

Kathy shares her thoughts on the opening presentations...The conference kicked off with Tru Pettigrew’s presentation on Tapping into your Greatness, “Tru's presentation was outstanding. It was the best of the conference.  He identified with the group and spoke to everyone like it was a one on one conversation.  He broke the subject down with meaningful stories and references to personal stories and insights.”

The next presentation was ‘Inspiring Story of Polio Eradication and Rotary in Pakistan’...“Donna Peffley's presentation- was moving and shared how the need is still so great to end polio, but also the need for clean water.  Many people take it for granted, but it is a global issue.”

‘ Making a Difference in the World’, Rotary Peace Fellow, Sakun Gajurel shared about how to value local context when disaster relief comes in.  I can see how our, RED SEAS DG is definitely good timing in Peace Fellow message. Doing good must include local context

LaunchMyCity, Matthew Kane, started in Detroit by Rotary and another in Raleigh, there are a total of 8 Launch cities in North Carolina (including Knightdale, Rolesville, Apex, Cary, Wake Forest, with Durham being the newest one)  Panel of entrepreneurs and mentors shared all that they have learned. Friday ended with the USO sharing about the good the do for our men and women in the armed forces and how Rotary’s service project collecting travel toiletries is well needed and appreciated.  USO NC Director serves 600k in NC non-profit....93cents of every dollar goes back into program 1200 volunteers in NC

Saturday, opened with a lovely memorial service for 11 Rotarians that passed on during the 2018-2019 Rotary year.

UNC Women’s Soccer Coach, Anson Dorrance presented the 13 Core Values he teaches his athletes.  It was very interesting how the focus of character is as important as the physical performance of an athlete and Coach Dorrance showed how it is governed throughout the program.  The team votes on each other’s character and is awarded.

Taylor Huie, President of Duke Rotaract shared how Rotary is Part of Who She Is, our RED SEAS DG would be a good opportunity to work with Rotaract’s.

Officer Tyler Croneberger, presented on Bullying in our Schools and Communities.

The final presentation was on the upcoming 2020 District 7710 Conference which will be in Winston Salem.  Marie Howard, DGE, shared her some of her goals for 2019-2020 Professional Leadership Development will be in August and April. There will also be a Rotarian Business Directory.  A Governors award for the Rotarian that is Bigger, Better, and Bolder....and clubs for Paul Harris

IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER

May 18 - District Training and Networking event (Greenwood Forest Church) 2019 District Conference – May 3 & 4
Location:  In District at the McKimmon Center - 1101 Gorman Street, Raleigh
We are doing things differently at this year’s event – so mark your calendars to join the fun.
Our District 7710 is collecting toiletries for the USO throughout the Rotary Year and sorting these toiletries at the District Conference next May 3 & 4, 2019.
To keep things more manageable, they are asking that we only collect the following 3 items:
Shampoos
Conditioners
Soaps
These should be the individual size items you typically find in hotels --- not large bottles.  Think sizes that would be appropriate as carry on liquids for the airlines.
