It's re-run time, friends

Hey, everyone! We're still working on a brand new episode. So, in the meantime, listen to Episode #41: What It Looks Like, which is about Jamie Keiles, a writer who decided to photograph something that’s usually invisible. Plus, PJ discovers the secret code he’s accidentally been speaking, and learns about the people who created it.

Listen to Episode #41: What It Looks Like

Jessica recommends one of her favorite movies ever: “It’s called Suzhou River. It’s truly such a strange movie. The story is told to us by this guy behind the camera; we never see his face, just an arm when he reaches out to shake somebody’s hand. He’s in love with a dancer whose main gig is performing in a mermaid costume at a seedy bar in Shanghai. And his whole love story takes place right next to the river, where, as folklore goes, a heartbroken girl drowned herself and has since become a mermaid. The two stories start to intertwine–and I really can’t say any more. It’s like Hitchcock’s Vertigo meets Wong Kar-wai. You can watch the whole thing here.”
Reply All Intern Christina Djossa says: "After six long years, Vampire Weekend is back with their new album Father of the Bride! And I couldn't be happier. When I listen to the album, it's hard not to have nostalgia for my high school days when I used to listen to their 2008 album on repeat with friends in the yard. But at the same time, Vampire Weekend's sound and lyricism have matured over the years. So, the tone of the album is somewhat youthful, but layered with the reality of adulthood and the responsibilities that come with it, like raising kids or balancing relationships both old and new. Some of my favorite songs are 'Harmony Hall' and 'Bambina.' So it's looking like Father of the Bride is going to be one of many summer anthems I will be bopping to this year."

Emmanuel says: "I cannot stop talking about Free Solo. When I sat down to watch it for the first time a couple weeks ago, all I knew was that it was documentary about a guy’s attempt to climb El Capitan in Yosemite. What I didn’t know is that this guy, Alex Honnold, is attempting to do this without any safety ropes or pegs! Instead Alex plans to “solo” it, using nothing but his hands and feet. What that means, practically speaking, is that Free Solo is a movie about the pursuit of literal perfection. If Alex makes a mistake–slips a little, misjudges a toehold–he’s dead.

It's amazing, palm-sweat inducing stuff.  Alex is very Spock-like about the prospect of his death should he fail, but something happens to him that complicates how he feels about his quest. The movie, like Alex, once so focused on climbing, zooms out. You hear the concerns of the cameramen who are filming the climb; they worry about their presence distracting Alex and killing him, but they also want to be there for their friend.  I’ve never seen anything like it."

Gimlet Development Producer Jasmine Romero recommends baking this cheesy Middle Eastern dessert: "For making kanafeh, the pan you cook it in matters. An aluminum rectangle cake pan helps with it not sticking, but a cast iron pan will give the edges a nice crispness. If you overcook it, it's more likely to stick. So, watch out for that (and try not to bake it while watching Game of Thrones). Use high-quality ingredients because there are only four ingredients, so it needs good ones to shine. Also, use a digital thermometer to take the temperature of the simple syrup. It has to cook and reduce for a lot longer than you'd think and it helps to have a thermometer."

Julia Kaplan, business development manager at Gimlet, says: "I would like to recommend the new Netflix animated comedy Tuca and Bertie. Imagine if Broad City and Bojack Horseman had a baby...enough said, right? The show stars Tiffany Haddish, Ali Wong, Steven Yeun, and many other talented actors. In addition to those wonderful performances, the animation is brilliant, the show is touching yet hilarious, and there's a bunch of cool surprises that will really, really shock you."
