Grace to you, and peace...

We got to surprise Miss Rose Finkelstein in the best way on Sunday! We brought her in during the Sermon from the Steps -- she looked quite confused and bewildered! -- to celebrate fifteen years (this June) of service to our congregation. Her first nursery baby, Will Murray, was on hand to present Rose with a bouquet of flowers, and we gave her a gift certificate and a lovely necklace as well. Thank you to the Christian Nurture team for helping plan this fun. And thank you to you, Rose, for loving our kids for a decade and a half!

There's more excitement coming your way on Wednesday night. It's time for the EPC Talent Show. Bring your songs, your jokes, your dance moves, your musical instruments, or whatever else you need to show off some talent. This year's show is hosted by the Senior High Youth in what they're calling "Laughs for Gas." The idea is that if you have fun at the Talent Show, you'll express thanks for it with a contribution to the Youth Fund. Our goal for a successful Montreat trip is $1,500.

On Thursday evening (starting at 6 pm) our sanctuary will host an informational meeting for the Jefferson County Memorial Project, in partnership with H.I.V.E. Alabama.

J.C.M.P. is a grass-roots organization seeking to educate about the history connected to the thirty documented victims of racial terror listed at the National Memorial for Peace and Justice (the "lynching memorial"). If you have yet to visit the Memorial, there is a matching monument for each county adjacent to the main exhibit waiting to be claimed and brought home. So part of J.C.M.P.'s work is to bring home Jefferson County's memorial. I hope you will join us to learn more.

Our Muslim friends have begun their celebration of Ramadan. As has become their tradition, the Birmingham Islamic Society has opened their doors and invited any who wish to learn more, to break the fast with them, to observe prayer, and to enjoy a fabulous supper. We have been invited to partner with Shades Valley Presbyterian Church for a visit on Monday, May 20th at 7 p.m. Those of us who have visited during Ramadan before can tell you how gracious the welcome and how tasty the supper will be. You can sign up to attend at this link. Please email me if you have any questions.

I'll bring your attention to the box below advertising "Presby Kickball" at Southminster Pres. This sounds lie a lot of fun and a good stress-reliever, all in a low-stakes atmosphere. If we can't et a team going, I'm gonna go play anyway. If you're interested in putting your sparkly new EPC T-shirt to use, email me ASAP!

We have some lingering prayer concerns:

Mike Morgan was able to get home on Thursday and was working hard on his physical therapy when an infection at the surgery site brought him back to Brookwood Sunday night. He had surgery Monday morning and is recovering. This is a frustrating step back for Mike and Alice. Please keep them in your prayers, check in on them, and then say another prayer for Mike.

Rich and Lara Jesse were very excited to bring Magnolia Ruth home a few days ago. They are grateful for your love and prayers. I know y'all just can't wait to meet this sweet girl.

I quoted Rachel Held Evans several times in both my sermon and in our liturgy on Sunday. I want to share with you a quote that didn't make it into Sunday's service, but which I think will be meaningful to many of you:

"Imagine if every church became a place where everyone is safe, but no one is comfortable. Imagine if every church became a place where we told one another the truth. We might just create sanctuary." - Rachel Held Evans, Searching for Sunday: Loving, Leaving, and Finding the Church.

Peace be with you,
Joe
