WVU Extension Service Family and Community Development program announces spring hires
The West Virginia University Extension Service Family and Community Development program has recently hired two positions that will focus on areas of entrepreneurial leadership and safety for campus facilities management.
Amanda Mason will serve as the Safety and Health Extension specialist for clinical safety and health. She will work as a bridge to bring that unit’s knowledge on workforce safety to WVU’s Environmental Safety and Health and Facilities Management departments with a more robust training program and continued OSHA compliance.
The other hire, Lauren Prinzo, formerly a WVU Extension agent in Marion County, will be joining the Family and Community Development program to focus on a new aspect of leadership training that will improve upon the entrepreneurial spirit that is prevalent in the state. She’ll use that knowledge and her experience in working at the community level to increase engagement with Extension programs, which help drive communities forward.

Randolph County WVU Extension Service launches edible landscape project with local schools
Have you ever climbed trees, dug in sand, played in dirt, planted seeds, jumped in leaves or played outside in similar ways? With guidance from the Randolph County WVU Extension Service office, schools in Randolph County have been slowly adding natural elements, including raised bed gardens and stepping stones, to their playgrounds.
The next step in the process is to plant edible landscaping that will provide not only shade and beauty, but also food for the school cafeteria. Schools are seeking donations to purchase thorn-less blackberry bushes, blueberry bushes, apple trees and pear trees. Students from each school have measured to determine how many of each species can be housed on their playgrounds.

Garden Fest extends Master Gardeners' education efforts
Mary Beth Bennett can’t help sounding proud when she talks about the projects done by Berkeley-Jefferson Extension Master Gardeners Association members and what their volunteer work means locally.
“It really is about community service and taking what they learn through this training out to other people,” she said.
Bennett, who is employed by the WVU Extension Service, is no stranger to the work because she serves as the county’s agriculture agent. She also is an adviser to the local Master Gardener program and spends plenty of time with participants.
