     School Value for Term 2
     Pono/Integrity
Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Welcome back to Term Two, I trust that with the great weather we have had many families managed to get a well earned Easter Break.  A warm welcome to all of our new students and families who started school this term.  We wish you all the very best.

Our school was represented at the ANZAC day service at the RSA during the holidays and my thanks go to Harriet Barter and Henry Fisher for laying a wreath on behalf of our school.  As per usual, this term is going to be no different with a very busy calendar ahead and I am sure many of our students will be looking forward to the annual disco on Friday 17 May.  Our annual Triathlon also takes place this Friday and we wish all of our students taking part all the very best.

Next Thursday night will be the last Board of Trustees meeting for the current Board.  If you are interested in standing for the new Board you are more than welcome to attend this meeting to see what it entails and ask the current BOT any questions you might have regarding the role and position.  Please consider standing and let the office know if you intend coming to the meeting.

Our paid union meetings took place at school today.  Teachers have been asked whether to accept or reject the government's latest offer (which has not changed) and discuss options available moving forward.  Latest polling validates what a lot of us feel from parents every day - the public is right behind us.  In fact, the support we have is at the same high levels as it was a year ago - and there's no sign of it waning.  You can read the whole report for yourselves here, but here are some top-line numbers:
89% of the public support more money being spent on education relative to other issues
89% agree there is a shortage of teachers
83% agree we need a pay rise
79% agree we need more time for planning, preparation, and assessment
91% agree more needs to be done to support students with additional needs.

The staff at school thank you for your continued support in this matter.

Kind regards,

Gary Pasfield
Principal

Yummy Apple Stickers
Once again Waimauku School is collecting Yummy Apple stickers for our school’s share of the $200,000 free DG Sport sports gear prize pool. In the past few years that we have participated in this programme, the school has received over $2000.00 worth of free sports gear.

From now until the end of term three, we will be collecting the Yummy cut-out labels from bags (each cut-out label is worth 10 stickers) and individual Yummy apple stickers. Yummy apples are available from New World, PAK’nSAVE and participating Four Square stores. Each class will have a collection sheet; however if it is easier for families to collect them at home, any piece of A4 paper is acceptable. Once the paper is full, send it to school with your child and they can hand it in their teacher.

The more we collect, the more sports gear we get, so get going and start collecting your Yummy cut-out labels and stickers now!

Pedestrian Crossing Safety for Drivers
At a pedestrian crossing if there is a person waiting to cross on either side you must stop.  This is the law and applies to all pedestrian crossings
including ones like ours with a road patrol crew.

Entertainment Books
Entertainment Books have now been given to students to bring home. Please have a look, there are ways that you can purchase, or you may wish to have a digital copy, and details are included. If you wish to get a digital copy, the book copy must be returned, and if you don't wish to have the book please return this and it is important that it is in the ENVELOPE, as they are scanned to ensure that we do have a track of the book. Thank you to the 21 people who had already purchased, it is a great way to support the school, while you treat yourself. To those of you who can sell more, please help us out, and we will obtain book copies, or you can order further digital copies. Enjoy looking at what is on offer, and returned books, can come to the big marked box in the office. We appreciate your support!

Waimauku School Ski Team
Each year the school enters a school ski team into the North Island Primary School Ski Championship (NIPS).  This year the year 1-6 is being held 2-5 September.   The entry requirement is that each child needs to be skiing at an intermediate level, and be able to get on and off the T-Bar by themselves.   The Races are held at Whakapapa up in the Valley (very top under the Pinnacles) and is accessible by Chair and then T-bar.   Children in years 1-4 race a separate course to the 5 and 6.   The first day is two runs, the second day is a dual race (where you race the child who has the closest time).  Points are given for the placing and the overall results.  The school is then placed based on the total points.

It is a great week, and a really nice atmosphere with all children cheering each other on.  The Waimauku team is a friendly team with all parents pitching in with various duties and helping out.

If your child would like to be part of the team or if you have any questions, please contact Claire Arkell on claire@cloudcents.co.nz or 021773771 before 20 May.
