Hello Bristol Public Engagement Network and welcome to Connect, our monthly bulletin for staff and students interested in public engagement. Our Conversations that Count festival kicks off later this month (30 May-11 June) and we hope to see you there!

Register for events in our Conversations That Count festival (30 May-11 June). It includes an Engaged Learning workshop on creating effective partnerships for curriculum engagement and a short public performance Alonely exploring loneliness-based reflections of older people in Bristol. Join us to welcome Dr Rajesh Tandon, UNESCO Co-Chair of Community Based Research and Social Responsibility in Higher Education, to launch the festival. His talk will explore how universities can be more socially responsible and connect with communities (30 May). It’s not one to miss! Get your tickets on Eventbrite.

Tell us about your public engagement. As part of the festival's launch, we are creating an exhibition to highlight all the fantastic public engagement work of staff and students. If you'd like us to feature your project - big or small - email Ellie Cripps asap for more info.

Develop skills in facilitation for Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) activities as part of a workshop (19 June) hosted by People in Health West of England.

Get involved in the University’s biggest public engagement event of the year. You can still register to take part in FUTURES to celebrate European Researchers’ Night on 27-28 September. Check out our website and email the FUTURES team asap to take part.

Join our team as an intern this summer to support the delivery of FUTURES 2019. One role will support marketing and social media and the other will support events development and delivery. The roles are open to current undergraduate and postgraduate students and will be 2 days/week, July - September. For more info contact the FUTURES team.

Make a short film to tell a story related to human health during the LabCut Science Film Workshop (13-15 June) at the University of Warwick. The workshop is free and films created will be screened at the British Science Festival.

Share your engagement story at the annual Engage conference (4-5 December, Bristol), coordinated by the NCCPE. You can propose workshops, talks, posters and more on their website (deadline 18 June). If you’d like a hand to shape your ideas, just email us.

Talk to local science teachers about your research (25 June). The School of Education are looking for researchers who can give a 30-min engaging talk about their work which links to the secondary school science curriculum. Email Ellie Cripps for more info.

Inspire school students and families from across the UK with hands-on STEM Activities at Big Bang UK (11-14 March, Birmingham). Email us for advice (deadline 31 August).

Engage the people of Sherborne with your research. Sherborne Science Café are looking for speakers for their regular events on the fourth Wednesday evening of the month. For more info contact the PE team.

Read the paper by PhD students Dani Carrillo and Chanelle Lee about workshops they led to inspire school students in France about robotics. The activity was supported by our Public Engagement Seed Fund which will relaunch later this summer. Read the abstract and contact Dani Carrillo for the full paper.
