Dundee saw over 100 adult learners gaining recognition in the form of an Adult Achievement Award for previous learning in their caring role, taking part in community-based adult learning, volunteering and work experience and from being involved in community activities, in an event in Dundee.

The Adult Achievement Awards were developed by Newbattle Abbey College with support from Napier University and Education Scotland and launched in 2015.

The event was also a celebration of the development of a local network of organisations who have developed a partnership to deliver the awards. (Dundee Carers Centre, Dundee City Council Community Learning & Development, Angus Council Community Learning & Development, Volunteer Dundee, Wellbeing Works & LEAD Scotland) Well done everyone!

Deaf people are up to four times as likely to experience mental health issues such as depression and anxiety compared to hearing people. Deafscotland, Deaf Links and ITV SignPost have launched a series of three related accessible video clips in British Sign Language (BSL) with subtitles and voiceover, introducing some key information from the See Me Campaign about mental health and wellbeing from the deaf communities in Scotland:

STRTEGIC PLANNING Our strategic plan sets the objective for all our work here at Lead Scotland and we need your help to decide on the direction of travel. Over the last 3 years we have supported more learners, we have matched more people with befrienders and we have received more calls to our helpline. Should we be doing more of the same in 2020 to 2023? Should we be doing things differently? What do you need Lead Scotland to be doing in the future to support you? Please fill out our short survey and share your views with us.

Recently a new website Supporting Disabled Young People and their Families has been launched by Maree Todd, Minister for Children and Young People, on behalf of the Scottish Government.

Research has been launched by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) into whether legal aid enables people who raise a discrimination complaint in Scotland to get justice.
The equality body wants to hear from anyone who has experienced discrimination in Scotland since 1 January 2016. They also want to hear from solicitors, as well as organisations and groups who support people who experience discrimination.
The research project will look at whether legal aid for discrimination cases provides effective access to justice for people who have suffered discrimination in Scotland, including:
  • how discrimination cases are funded by legal aid
  • how many people receive legal aid funding for discrimination claims, including representation or assistance with bringing a case in a court or tribunal, and how this compares with the number of individuals who seek advice about discrimination
  • whether there are barriers to effective access to legal aid
  • whether some individuals experience specific difficulties in accessing legal aid, for example language or literacy difficulties, or because of a disability
  • whether improvements could be made to reduce barriers and improve access to justice
The survey for individuals who have experienced discrimination can be found here.
The survey for advisers, organisations and other groups who assist people who experience discrimination can be found here.
