Do more Yoga!

How do you do more yoga? Sometimes it can seem challenging just to make it to class in a week, let alone do more. It can be surprisingly simple, and there are lots of different ways to do more yoga. You could: do Pawanmuktasana Alternate Leg in bed for 2 minutes per side before you get up in the morning, or before you go to sleep, or both; stand in Tadasana while you brush your teeth, wash your dishes, and wait in line; add 20 minutes of Ujjayi Pranayama to your day; do the Magic Four once a day or once more; utilize one of Swamiji's Quick Fixes (we have 4 so far - Level Up, 3-5 Ujjayi breaths, 2 minutes of mantra repetition, and cultivating yogic responses); take an extra class; come to the free meditation satsang on Wednesdays from 6pm-7:30pm; come to the free class on the 2nd Sunday of every month; take a road trip to Downingtown for Swami Sunday;  take a 1/2 day workshop; take Foundations;  treat yourself to an Embodyment® session or a series; take a meditation course; explore all the free teachings available to you from Swami Nirmalananda; listen to yoga chants; repeat mantra; and so much more!

Terry Gardner, owner of Rehoboth Beach Yoga
Terry's Thoughts: April was a whirlwind - an exciting and busy month! Personally, it started with a family weekend away and ended with a big family wedding, and in between was all about yoga! The yoga began with my week of teacher training at Svaroopa Vidya Ashram in Downingtown, PA. Sandy and I both made the trip up to Lokananda. Continuing education for teachers is as rewarding and as fun as it is for our students to learn a new pose or a new alignment. I have to admit, I have always loved being in teacher training from 6:30 am to 9:30 pm. It’s all there, chanting, meditation, new poses and techniques to learn.
Immersion in yoga is so blissful! And then we get to bring it back to our students - fine tuning your alignments and making your poses even more effective. How wonderful is that!? It’s very rewarding and I’m so grateful to have found Svaroopa® yoga - it really is amazing!
April has also been a fun month because it's that time of year when we are seeing so many familiar faces returning to our studio - our summer (or perhaps we should call you our warm weather) regulars. Welcome back - we are all happy to see you! I encourage all of you to enjoy the rest of our newsletter. I truly appreciate all Kelly’s work to make it fresh and we hope to hear from you on our class times survey! And of course I encourage all of you to do more yoga....
Namaste,
Terry

SVA logoMark your calendars for a special celebration at Rehoboth Beach Yoga in honor of Swamiji's Shaktipat anniversary - Friday, May 31st from 7pm-9pm. This free program will include asana, a special discourse, short meditation, and some social time with tea and cookies. We hope you can join us to spend time with your kula, your yoga community. Find out more here.

Downingtown Yoga and Meditation CenterYou may be aware that we are a mere two hours from Svaroopa Vidya Ashram, home of Sadguru Swami Nirmalananda, and the teacher training school (Lokananda) where immersions in Svaroopa® yoga and Svaroopa® Vidya meditation are offered. Terry and Sandy spent several days up there in Deceptive Flexibility in April. Kelly will be heading up for two courses in May - a Shaktipat Retreat and Treating Pain. It's always great when your teachers return from training - refreshed, renewed and revitalized. We all benefit!

Sadguru Swami Nirmalananda SaraswatiOf course, trainings aren't the only reason for heading up to Lokananda. Swami Sunday happens most weeks, and consists of two programs. The Guru Gita begins at 8:30am, which means a 6am departure. If chanting (or a 6am departure) is not for you, please consider heading up at 10am for satsang. Swami Nirmalananda will lead the group in another (shorter) chant, and then offer some teachings. Kelly attends Swami Sundays a couple of times a month, and would love to have you join her! She will be going on Sunday, May 12th and Sunday, May 26th. If neither of those dates work, she will also be going up on June 16th and June 30th. If you're interested in attending both the Guru Gita and Satsang, you are welcome to hit the road with Kelly at 6am. If you would like to meet her up there later for Satsang, she can coordinate that with you. And, if you had time, we could certainly avail ourselves to lunch afterwards at one of the many delicious restaurants in the area. What a great way to spend a Sunday... on a yoga field trip! Email Kelly with any questions or to make some plans.
A Month of Sundays
by Kelly Kushala Sharp
I’m always talking about the power of putting words to your experiences, usually when I’m waiting for someone to share the differences they notice in their marker pose at the end of class. March was shaping up to be quite a momentous month, so I figured I would practice what I preached. I crawled into March suffering physically from a bad cold and emotionally from a couple of hard months. After attending the first Swami Sunday of the month, and from the depths of despair, I decided to go to Swami Sunday every Sunday in March. This is the story of the results of that decision.
What brought me to March… my parents both passed away in January, 11 days apart. Read more.
With All Your Heart fundraiser
Yoga teaches you to put your heart into whatever you do, especially into your yogic practices. As yoga quiets your mind, you tune into your heart, your own essence. You progress in your practices and your heart swells. When you open your heart, you naturally want to give from the bottomless depth of your being. You want to contribute. It works the other way too. Swamiji says that when you open your wallet, even a little bit, you open your heart. Support the heart of this powerful practice. Donate as a way to honor your teacher, and the teachings. Donate to the Ashram here.
Class Schedule Survey
We're growing, and we're looking to add some more classes to our schedule. For the summer, we will be adding an 8am class on Saturday mornings, and moving the 9am class to 10am. You may have already received the invitation to our survey. If you have completed it, thank you! If you haven't, give us a couple minutes of your time, and let your voice be heard! Click here.
Blanket 101
We’ve joked about it for years… holding a Blanket 101 class. We like to warn our new students that the blanket folding is the trickiest part of this amazing yoga. We’ve also talked about how this is a living yoga, subject to change with increased clarity about the effectiveness of certain aspects of the practice. We are very excited to announce there is a new way to fold blankets! This simple shift in blanket folding creates a more stable stack, that will provide more effective support, which will provide more release. And as we all know, Support = Release. Check it out here!

Travels with Terry

In 2003 I organized my first week long yoga travel adventure. I took 9 students, partly made up of friends and family that were taking my classes, to Pura Vida Spa Yoga and Retreat Center in my beloved Costa Rica. The spa was In the center of the country close to the Airport in San Jose. Everyone loved the experience. We had a yoga class in the morning before breakfast then went out to explore the rainforest, or take a zip line, a white water rafting trip, or hike to an extinct volcanic lake. We had another yoga class before dinner. We would linger into the evening in the open air eating area with seekers from different groups and the therapists until they started to turn out the lights. Some moved to the outdoor hot tub with the view of the city at night and the stars above. It was heavenly. The resort was beautiful and rustic, all enclosed in 12 acres, so it was small and intimate. Our rooms were very comfortable, no phones, no TV, only a coffee pot with great local coffee  and usually a lovely view.
After two successful trips, Kim Abplanalp Joined me and we began to build a growing group and a growing adventure for our students . The experience of two classes per day in these  relaxed surroundings had an effect on the participants. They came home to a more dedicated practice, and many took Foundations teacher training - some to teach, and others to deepen their personal practice.
At night from the balconies,  the city looked like a giant bowl of sparkling diamonds! We soaked in the the newness of this unique experience. The yoga studios were well equipped and beautiful. The food was glorious, healthy and freshly prepared with love and attention. The spa services were extraordinary and beyond what we were accustomed to. It all felt very exotic. And then there was the staff and people.... we fell in love... we went every year for six years. And then a space opened up in their sister spa in Tulum, Mexico! To be continued.....
