Art in Science club runs on Thursday’s after College from 3:05 pm to 4:00 pm. This week the students have been exploring traditional cave pigments and cave painting. How does cave art last for such a long time? The secret is in the mixture! 


The students have been mixing up the raw ingredients and experimenting with cave painting styles and have produced a range of work that really embodies various traditional styles of cave art.

A massive well done to the following students in the Eggcellent attendance awards! 

Every student who had 0% absence for terms 3 and 4 won an Easter egg with those students who had 0% absence for terms 1 to 4 gaining the larger prize of a supersized chocolate treat! 

In addition to these prizes, for every week a student has 0% absence they earn a raffle ticket which is entered into a prize draw for £30. Congratulations to Mia Trolloe who won this highly sought after prize!

Pastoral Leader for Year 10 & 11

Several Year 11 students were taken to Plymouth Mega Bowl. This was a reward for their efforts during the previous term and their names were drawn out during an assembly. 

Students were treated to two games of bowling and a burger dinner. The evening was a great way to celebrate their successes as well as enjoy an evening of relaxation prior to the Easter break.

An all-girls team have been crowned football champions - in a boys league.

SB Frankfort under 12 all girls team had no other local female teams to play against - so this year they joined the DJM boys league.

Olivia Giles attends our College in Year 7 and she belongs to the girls team that has created this inspirational win in sport, inspiring girls everywhere to try football and not be afraid to play in a league full of boys teams.

We are all very proud of Tylor!

 Tylor managed to gain a place on the Plymouth School boys’ team, this season, the team ended the group games with a 7-1 win against West Cornwall to top the group. In the Easter holidays they attended a festival in Somerset where they played teams from across the country. They played extremely well, winning 4 out of 5 games with just the 1 loss. The team took part in the semi final of the Broad Shield up against Torbay last Friday. To cap off a superb season they won the game 3-1 to book their place in the final, in which they beat East Cornwall 4-3 in the Broad Shield Cup Final last night. 

Tylor has enjoyed his season with the schoolboys and was rewarded by being selected to play for the U15s in their semi final game. This is the second time he has played up an age for the schoolboys this season.

On Friday, KS3 Nurture Group travelled to the Life Centre for Indoor Rock Climbing. With nerves settling in for most students, it was clear that this week’s activity was going to be a real challenge. 

It was great to see all students pushing themselves and encourage each other to do well. A special mention to Brooke, who was the only one who managed to climb to the top of the 52ft wall. Another special mention to Saffron, who is very scared of heights managed to conquer her fear and climb 4 metres. 

The students finished the session with team building games in the bouldering cave. Not only did students improve their climbing and belaying technique, but they also improved in confidence, resilience, self-motivation and teamwork. 

We are back at the wall next week, where I am positive that many other students will continue encouraging each other, build their confidence and conquer the wall!

Year 8 and Year 9's have embarked on a wonderful sailing opportunity partnered with Mount Batten Water Sport Centre, to improve students motivation and resilience. Already, there has been a huge progress in student's skill set, teamwork and a never give up attitude. 

With the weather being on our side (so far), it is great to see so many students engaging, working hard and enjoying sailing in the sun. 

I look forward to the next coming weeks to see how far students can challenge themselves.

Summer Examinations 

The Summer Examinations series has now begun. During this busy time, it is vital that students continue to use their time during half term in order to maximise their revision and exam preparation. We will be running our popular Masterclasses during May Half Term for year 11 students in order to support them with some revision with their subject teachers during half term. 

Revision 

As students enter a crucial time in their education, your support is vital in ensuring they fulfil their potential and I thank you in advance for this. It can sometimes be difficult in knowing how best to support your child when revising at home, and with this in mind we have updated our College revision webpage to include more detailed guidance and ideas to support students and parents. Exam Dates

All students have been provided with an exam timetable and have written their exam details into their planners. If students require another exam timetable, please ask them to speak to the Exams Officer – Mrs Dawe. She can also be contacted on r.dawe@sjhcsc.co.uk if you have any questions. 

Uniform

All students are required to attend all exams in full College uniform. This includes bringing a College jumper to their exams. 

Study Leave 

From Monday 6th June onwards, students will be required to attend College for the following reasons: 

-    An exam
-    A booster session for an exam 
-    A normal lesson in which students have not yet completed the exams
-    At any time a member of staff requests a student to attend

Where students have a booster session or normal lesson during period 1 or 5 they must make sure that they attend registration with their tutor. Where students attend College for a booster session or lesson which begins at period 3, they can revise at home in the morning and then they must sign in at student services when they arrive on site. If students have completed all their lessons or booster sessions for the day and are leaving site, they must sign out at student services. 

We strongly recommend that students stay in College to revise and therefore, we will ensure that the Learning Café is open for students from Monday 6th June onwards, during normal lesson time, so that students can revise there if they do not have a booster session or lesson. Students can also choose to attend their normal timetabled lessons where the member of staff will be available to supervise them.

Autograph catering who provide school meals for all schools on the Wood View campus will be increasing the cost of school meals in line with the local authority annual increase. The increase in prices are as follows: 

• Infant, junior, primary and special schools from £2.10 to £2.20 
• Secondary schools and academies from £2.30 to £2.50 

This will be effective from the 3rd June 2019 after the May half term break.
