Myths and Reality About Canadian Copyright Law, Fair Dealing and Educational Copying (M. Geist, infojustice.org, April 30)
This blog post discusses a number of myths about Canadian copyright law in three areas: Canadian publishers and fair dealing, Canadian education licensing practices under fair dealing, and collective licensing vs. site and transactional licensing. It argues that “educational spending on licensing in Canada has increased with exceptions and licences co-existing in a manner that provides appropriate compensation for authors and publishers alongside increased access and flexibility for educational uses.” Read more

According to H. Knopf, the proposed Regulations Establishing Time Limits in Relation to Matters Before the Copyright Board “which could have been implemented many years ago and which did NOT need any new enabling legislation – may very well make things even worse in terms of delay and may be used to attempt to normalize delays that are already inexplicable and unacceptable.” Read more

This blog post looks at the tools and problems with measuring open access. Improving these metrics would improve understanding of what type of information is available to those without institutional access, facilitate text and data mining, and enable us to track research funder OA compliance and measure practical benefits of OA research to researchers. Read more

How Data Science Workers Work with Data: Discovery, Capture, Curation, Design, Creation (M. Muller, I. Lange, D. Wang, D. Piorkowski, J. Tsay, Q.V. Liao, C. Dugan, & T. Erickson, CHI Conference, 2019)
This paper addresses the need to understand how data practitioners engage with data and understand their workflows. It found that “data science workers develop an intuitive sense of their data and processes, and actively shape their data” and proposed ways of applying such interventions analytically. Read more

Understanding OA Ebook Usage: Toward a Common Framework (B. O’Leary & K. Hawkin, Humanities Commons, May 6)
This study identified the challenges in understanding the usage of open-access e-books and developed recommendations for addressing them. In particular, “the project proposed the potential development of a 'data trust' as a vehicle to manage the multiple data sets that are key to understanding OA ebook usage while respecting commercial and individual user concerns.” Read more
