PERIOD PRIDE Blog Series

In the lead up to the Women Deliver Conference in Vancouver June 3-6, we teamed up with Naturopathic Doc and hormone specialist Joanna Rosenfeld to explain each stage of the menstrual cycle. We believe that discussing the physical, mental and political aspects of menstruation can help decrease stigma and increase pride!

So many people around the world who menstruate have experienced various forms of oppression for centuries. Check out our first post explaining the menstrual cycle from start to finish.

Part II, we discuss the fun follicular stage
Part III explores what happens during ovulation

Ways to Fight

The last few weeks have been very difficult to say the least. The Anti-Abortion laws being passed in the states have been so disturbing.

The abortion laws are a clear effort to control women, so we're focusing on various ways you can continue to fight for women's rights.

Also, maybe if you need a break from fighting for women's rights you can focus on self-care.

RESILIENT SOUNDTRACK

This month we're featuring a local artist Victoria Anthony who got some viral coverage when she blew the crowd away singing at a Pink concert. Since then she has created her own single all about girls being able to escape societal expectations and live their dreams.

Victoria also happens to be the daughter of Christina Anthony, who created the Forum for Women Entrepreneurs- a non-profit designed to support women who own their own businesses (only 16% of all businesses in Canada are owned by women). Christina has been a champion for women in business and for anyone (including her daughter) to achieve their wildest dreams.

Don’t try to tell me I can’t do it cause
All that makes me wanna do is do it cause I can
Don’t try to tell me I’m not strong enough
All that makes me wanna prove is I’m enough ‘cause I am

Too weak, too innocent, showing too much skin
Too sweet, emotions so unstable
Too thin, too accommodating, it’s too much it’s suffocating
Time’s up now Imma turn the tables

Because I’m a girl, gotta be this and that
Because I’m a girl, gotta say this, not that
But because I’m a girl, I’m gonna be strong
Prove ‘em wrong
For every girl, I’ll conquer the world
Because I’m a girl

You tried to mold me, make me fit inside
Your old school stereotypes, yeah that’s nice but I can’t
You want to have your cake and eat it too
Act like a lady, but be cool and smile for you, well I’ll pass

Too weak too innocent, showing too much skin
Too sweet, emotions so unstable
Too thin, too accommodating, it’s too much it’s suffocating
Time’s up now Imma turn the tables

Because I’m a girl, gotta be this and that
Because I’m a girl, gotta say this, not that
But because I’m a girl, I’m gonna be strong
Prove ‘em wrong
For every girl, I’ll conquer the world
Because I’m a girl

I like who I see staring back at me
I’m alright with her, but not society
Your standards need to leave
Our bodies are for keeps
Your words they cut us deep
But they don’t make us bleed

Because we are girls
Because we are girls, gotta be this and that
Because we are girls, gotta say this, not that
Because we are girls, we’re gonna reach for the stars
‘Cause that’s who we are, we’ll conquer the world

Because we are girls
