June 2019
It is hard to believe that eight months have passed since we started up our pickleball down here at the church last September. Throughout the indoor season, our numbers continued to increase in our different sessions. New players are joining us each week in beginners and others are moving through to the other sessions as their skills improve. Thank you for welcoming these players into our different sessions. Our committee continues to work on solutions to help alleviate the inevitable crowding.

Last Session on Wednesday, June 5th

With the good weather, many players are going outside to play pickleball or pick up where they left off with fair weather activities. We will be having our last session on Wednesday, June 5th. Come and join us for a special treat prepared by Brenda Marcopolous. Hint, it starts with Rolo and ends with pie. We will be serving this wonderful ice cream treat twice on Wednesday, the 5th. For those in the Beginners/Advanced Beginner's session you will be served at 6:30PM after your session. The second serving will happen around 7:45PM for those leaving the second session and for those coming to play in the third session. Players from both those sessions are welcome to join us. If you are unable to play, but would like to just come socialize, please do.

Additionally, this will be the last edition of the Newsletter until we recommence in the fall.

Summer Outdoor Pickleball

Many friendships have been formed over the past year and players have developed a comfort level playing with those in their session. Some of you have expressed an interest in playing outdoors over the next three months before we start up again in September.

We are in the process of purchasing two portable nets that would allow us to use the five outdoor courts at Cromie Park in Ladner. There is also a good possibility that we will have access to the church gym during the summer when the weather is inclement. If you would like to receive notification of playing outdoors this summer with others from the SDBC pickleball crowd or playing periodically at the church, you can sign up by clicking here.

Further information will be coming once we know what the numbers are that are interested.
Thank you, and enjoy your pickleball and the fellowship!

Skill Development Session:

Dinking Only in Last skill session on Saturday, June 1st

We will be doing something different with our last skill session of the season. We will be opening up the session to all levels interested in playing dinking games only. Basically, it is played like a regular game, only all play is at the no volley line with dinking only; no kill shots. Depending on the numbers, we will divide up players so that you are playing players of similar abilities. Not only will it be fun, but most likely it will improve your dinking skills significantly.

New Pickleball Levels Self-assessment

A number of players are finding the USAPBA self-assessment too cumbersome to use.  You may find this assessment easier to use.  Give it a try.

Lost and Found

If you find you forgot something in the gym after a pickleball session, we will be putting items in the lost and found box in the church's coat rack area located outside of the washrooms.

General Rules of Play at SDBC

  • Please sign in for your session but do not arrive to sign in more than 30 minutes before the session you wish to play in begins.
  • In consideration of others playing at the current session, please do not enter the gym any earlier than 5 minutes prior to the start of your session. Please remain outside or in the church foyer.
  • Only attend a maximum of one playing session per day (exception: Skills Session)
  • Remember to pay the $2 per player fee at the beginning of your session.
  • Wear gym shoes to prevent injury from slipping.
  • Bring your own water bottle.
  • Please refrain from coaching fellow players unless they have asked for coaching.
  • When there are 4 or more players waiting, all games end when one of the teams reaches 9 points. No 2 point difference.
  • After your game, place your paddle in the rack oriented for winner or non-winner. The next four players to go out will be according to the orientation of the closest paddle to the beginning of the rack.
  • At the end of the final session of the day, please help clean up and put away all the equipment and chairs. The gym must be vacated within 10 minutes of the end of the session, in order for the church to be secured.
  • Level of Play: Play at the session that is appropriate for your skill level. If you need any assistance determining your skill level, please ask one of the hosts.
  • Rating Descriptors: Skill level ratings can be broken down into a range between 1.0-5.0. An advanced player is highly skilled and has mastered third shots, dinks, and lobs, and understands body and court position. Find your rating here.
