Aurora Bridge Weekly Update

The crews from Liberty continue to make good progress on the bridge painting. They’ve been working most Saturdays lately, in part because of the delays caused by the snow and ice last February, when they couldn’t do anything for about three weeks.
I’ve heard some concerns about this recently because when we talked with you before beginning the work, we said we’d do our best to avoid working on Saturdays. Because of the winter delays, Liberty needs to work Saturdays to get back on schedule. Just so you know, when the crews are working on Saturdays, they can’t do noisy work like sand-blasting and rivet-busting. Things like painting and moving equipment are OK
An early heads up – Liberty plans to work Saturday, May 25, during Memorial Day weekend, but not on Sunday or Memorial Day. WSDOT doesn’t allow work on roadways during holidays and holiday weekends, but this work doesn’t affect traffic and won’t create excessive noise, so it is allowed.
Part of this project includes repaving the George Washington Bridge. Crews will remove the existing paving nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday, May 28 to Thursday, May 30. Repaving will start Friday, May 31 at 7 p.m. and continue through 5 a.m. Monday, June 3. They’re going to work on the southern half of the northbound lanes (the southeast portion of the bridge). During the paving, the Aurora Bridge will be narrowed to one lane in each direction. That’s going to create backups, so consider alternative routes. When they’re paving the bridge, the contractors are allowed to reduce SR 99 to one lane in each direction for up to 10 weekends. Other dates so far include:

· June 28-July 1
· July 12-15
· Aug. 9-12, 16-19 and 23-26
This work is extremely weather-dependent because they need dry conditions. They hope to complete the work with fewer weekends, depending on how much they accomplish each weekend.
Chittenden Locks to Close May 29th

The large and small lock chambers will close to all marine traffic eight hours, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., May 29 to inspect and close a saltwater drain screen structure. The structure, immediately upstream of the locks, prevents salmon from entering the locks' saltwater return intake. Every year divers close 10, 10-foot-by-6-foot doors and inspect the 30-by-60 foot curved-front, mesh screen structure. The inspections require lock closures to all but emergency vessels on emergency calls. The staff will complete work as quickly and safely as possible. Earlier this year, the Fairview Ave N Bridge Replacement Project team submitted an advertisement for project construction. Orion Marine Contractors Inc. was recently awarded the construction contract. The project team will work with the contractor to outline the project schedule and prepare for detour preparation work on Aloha St. We expect to begin detour work this summer in advance of full bridge closure this fall. The full length of construction, including detour prep and bridge replacement, is expected to be about 19 months.
We will have more detailed information about the schedule to share soon. The project team plans provide timely updates to the community in advance of construction. We will host in-person events to provide project information, and will be available for briefings with businesses, residents and other stakeholders throughout this pre-construction period. Gertrude Eleanor (Schneider) Eva was born January 19, 1933 in Spokane, WA and died January 9, 2019, in Seattle, WA. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Allison Eva and Stan Wesson, her grandchildren, Max and Hank Wesson, and her sister, Rosemary Balazs. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Rose Schneider, and her partner, Frank Farrington. Gert grew up in Spokane and graduated from North Central High School. She was a long time owner of The Attic Tavern in Madison Park and lived in a houseboat on Lake Union for 56 years. She'd be mad if I paid for more than an inch in the obituaries! Celebration of Life was Saturday, May 11, 2-5 pm at the Electric Boat Company on Westlake.
Walter Eva was born January 1, 1932 in Chewelah, WA and died May 5, 2019 in Spokane, WA. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Allison Eva and Stan Wesson, his grandchildren, Max and Hank Wesson, and his sister, Sally Eva. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Florence, a brother, David, a sister, Carolyn Booton and his wife, June Eva. Walt grew up in Spokane, graduating from North Central High School and Gonzaga University. He served in the marines during the Korean War. During his lifetime he owned and operated The Attic Tavern, Seattle, The Skyroom Restaurant, Boeing Field, The NorWester Restaurant, White Pass, WA, Audrey's Diner, Newport, WA, The Dutch-American Bakery, Sedro Woolley, WA and Our Place at the Beach, Long Beach, WA. A celebration of life will be held in Spokane later this month.
