Dear Friends,
At the UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP), we believe in working with policymakers to change how public value and policy is imagined and practiced in order to tackle societal challenges. There is no better example of this than the UCL Commission for Mission-Oriented Innovation and Industrial Strategy (MOIIS), which was formed to help solve grand challenges through a mission-oriented framework.
After a year’s worth of collaborative meetings, the dedication and hard work of the MOIIS Commission culminated in the launch of the recently published report A Mission-Oriented UK Industrial Strategy. The Commission co-chairs, Professor Mariana Mazzucato and Lord David Willetts, alongside world-leading experts from across various disciplines and institutions, have provided a roadmap on how to target the four Grand Challenges outlined by the UK Government.
By aligning different missions to the Challenges – an Ageing Society, the Future of Mobility, Clean Growth and the AI and Data Economy – the Commission hopes that the report will result in concrete policies to attain sustainable and inclusive, investment-led growth.
Professor Mazzucato and Lord Willetts launched the report to a full-house at UCL and were honoured to have BEIS Minister, Chris Skidmore MP who welcomed the work of the Commission. We also heard insightful comments about how missions could be implemented by Government Chief Scientific Adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance. A video of the event will be uploaded to our YouTube channel soon but you can read about the launch here.
The work of the Commission is not over! As long as the Government wants to implement an Industrial Strategy that engages with societal and technological challenges, we will do our best to get it right.
We have received an incredible number of applications for our first Master of Public Administration (MPA) in Innovation, Public Policy and Public Value. So much so, we have had to close applications earlier than expected. Applications for September 2020 will open in October 2019, and we are looking forward to welcoming our first cohort of students soon.
Don’t forget that our public lecture series in partnership with the British Library titled Innovation and the Welfare State will be live-streamed to Facebook. We’re bringing together world-leading thinkers to debate how the 21st century welfare state can rethink healthcare, public access to knowledge and new forms of data ownership. If you would like to be added to the waiting list for any of the events, please contact iippcomms@ucl.ac.uk.
Also there are still tickets available to attend a special talk with renowned economic historian, Philip Mirowski, who will explore the dangers of the commercialisation and financialisation of science in pharmaceutical research with panel speakers Mariana Mazzucato, and UCL's Jack Stilgoe and Matthew Todd. You can book tickets here.
With the Summer season upon us, we wish you all a (hopefully) sunny June.
