Dear friends,
Ingrid and I are back and freshly awarded. It was lovely to see old friends and professors, and to be reminded of just how wonderful a theological college Vancouver School of Theology is. Again, if you like our ministry at St. George's, VST is to thank (or to blame if you don't like it). I'm sure they wouldn't mind a donation in support of their good work.
Speaking of supporting good work, we'll be joined this Sunday in worship by Christopher Bates, Executive Director of the Eureka Support Society. According to their online profile: "Eureka Clubhouse is a multi-faceted resource centre for adults who have a persistent mental illness. It provides a wide variety of recreational, social, educational and vocational activities on a daily basis according to the needs and interests of our members. The activities are provided in a welcoming environment where members can feel safe, secure and valued." Find them on Facebook here.
You may remember Harmony Freer who journeyed with St. George's before she abruptly ended her own life. Harmony was a regular at Eureka as she struggled with mental illness her whole adult life. Eureka is this year's community partner as a way to honour her and to extend God's grace in much needed ways. We've already raised over $400 from our Sunday Session concerts, and are holding a garage sale May 25th with the proceeds also going to Eureka. We plan other fundraising events and opportunities to serve later in the year, with our entire Christmas Eve offering going to them as well.
We continue our sermon series "Surprise" on the book of Acts this Sunday on Acts 11:1-18. Finally, you can eat that snake you've always wanted to eat but feared becoming ritually unclean! :-)
See you Sunday!
The Rev. Ryan Slifka
